The debut of James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe occurred in December with the release of the animated Max series titled “Creature Commandos.” This launch not only ignited a fresh cinematic series but also assembled an assortment of offbeat, unanticipated DC characters to create a team that fans have yet to encounter. Given the array of deep-cut and fan-favorite characters, it’s no wonder that other adored figures were mentioned for the “Creature Commandos” roster; they simply didn’t make the final cut.
Characters such as Weasel, Dr. Phosphorous, Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot, The Bride, and Frankenstein made an appearance in the first season of Creature Commandos. Initially, it’s tough to envision any other combination now that we’ve watched the series, but creator Gunn has shared some additional characters that were considered for the lineup.
In a social media post responding to a fan’s question about the Creature Commandos team, Gunn stated: “I seriously thought about including Wolfpack and Man-Bat, who happens to be one of my favorites. However, I felt drawn to telling Weasel’s story and it seemed like there were already too many wild and furry characters. I pondered over Vincent Velcoro but decided to pick a ‘creature’ that wasn’t the norm from within DC, so I went for Dr. Phosphorous instead. I also thought about Solomon Grundy, another favorite of mine, but I was quite determined on Frankenstein.
Devoted fans of DC Comics will likely recognize a few of those names as significant figures from the Commando teams within their literature. Vincent Velcoro, who possesses powers reminiscent of a vampire, was initially part of Project M’s first team, debuting as early as 1980. Wolfpack, on the other hand, has been a current member of the contemporary Commando squad, essentially embodying the werewolf character originally portrayed by Warren Griffith.
After viewing this list by Gunn, fans are left wondering if any of these characters might make an appearance in the DCU soon. With Creature Commandos receiving a second season and a new team being introduced for the upcoming episodes, it’s possible that some of these characters could be integrated into the group as the story progresses.
In terms of live-action DC Universe productions, it seems that any character could potentially be included at this stage, given Gunn’s knack for integrating beloved characters into his stories. Characters such as Solomon Grundy and Man-Bat, who are not only favorites of Gunn’s but also cherished by many DC fans, may very well make an appearance in the franchise. This is because the DC Universe seems to be focusing on lesser-known, intriguing characters from its roots. In fact, projects like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker are among the first in the DCU, while characters like Swamp Thing and Clayface are slated for feature films before icons such as Batman or Wonder Woman.
Unusual figures will significantly influence the DC Universe, which is promising news for any discarded characters from the Creature Commandos (equivalent to Suicide Squad).
