James Gunn Reveals Whether Matt Reeves’ Batman Villains Can Appear in the DCU (And Vice Versa)

In the upcoming movie “The Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves, we see Batman’s notorious enemies such as the Riddler, the Penguin, Catwoman, and the Joker making an appearance. However, with the new DC Universe introducing their own version of Batman in the film “The Brave and the Bold,” which is being developed by Andy Muschietti for DC Studios led by Peter Safran and James Gunn, it raises a question: can these same villains appear in both Reeves’ Batman story and the DCU?

In response to a question about whether there’s an arrangement regarding the usage of Batman’s villains between DC Studios and Reeves, Gunn stated on social media that “No, but both the Crime Saga and the DCU are under DC Studios, so we certainly consider everything. However, there’s no absolute rule.

In the upcoming sequel of “The Batman” that Reeves is directing, it remains undecided which villains from Batman’s rogue gallery will make an appearance in his Epic Crime Saga continuation. Over time, whispers have circulated about possible appearances by the masked antagonist Hush, the dual-natured Harvey Dent, and the shape-shifting Clayface. Notably, Clayface has been featured in the animated “Creature Commandos” series set within the DCU, while a live-action adaptation penned by Mike Flanagan and helmed by James Watkins is currently underway.

Although not directly linked to the official continuity starting with Gunn’s Superman movie on July 11, Reeves’ Batman universe – encompassing the HBO spinoff series The Penguin – falls under the umbrella of DC Studios, and is overseen by Gunn and Safran in production.

Similarly, Reeves is creating the Clayface film about the adaptable Batman adversary within Gunn’s DC Universe. Furthermore, he serves as an executive producer for the Batman: Caped Crusader animated series through his 6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company and Dynamic Duo. Additionally, he is involved in the Robins movie, an animated project under development by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn expressed his concerns about Batman, stating it’s his major point of contention within the DC universe at present. He also mentioned that the upcoming Wonder Woman film, which was just announced by DC Studios, is being given equal focus as the DCU’s Dark Knight.

In simpler terms, Gunn stated that he’s not personally writing Batman, but collaborating with the author who is. He emphasized the significance of both Batman and Wonder Woman to DC Comics. So, while he’s busy with other ongoing projects, his main focus along with this collaborator is completing the scripts for ‘Brave and the Bold’, specifically those related to Wonder Woman and Batman.

He further explained that distinguishing DCU Batman from Reeves’ Batman can be challenging, as the latter is in his second year of vigilante action during The Batman. A key distinction lies in the fact that Gunn drew inspiration for The Brave and the Bold from Morrison’s 2006 work “Batman & Son,” which featured a more seasoned Batman who had already trained multiple Robins before discovering Damian Wayne, his son with Talia al Ghul.

James Gunn emphasized that there needs to be a valid reason for creating a Batman movie, beyond the character’s popularity as the most prominent figure within Warner Bros. He clarified that while Batman is crucial to the DCU and distinct from Matt’s portrayal, he’s not interested in a humorous or campy version of the character.

He added, “I believe I’ve found a solution. In fact, I’m fairly certain I understand its nature. At present, I’m in discussions with the author to ensure we can bring it to fruition.

The Batman 2 is set for October 1, 2027, while The Brave and the Bold remains undated.
