Today marks exactly 85 years since Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s friend, made his debut on “The Adventures of Superman” radio show. The six-part series titled “Donelli’s Protection Racket,” which aired on April 15, 1940, presented Jimmy as a 14-year-old copy boy at the Daily Planet who eventually joined Clark Kent on his escapades. Although a character wearing a bow tie and working in an office was depicted in the comics from Action Comics #6 in 1938, DC Comics considers Superman #13 from 1941 as Jimmy Olsen’s first appearance in the comic books.
Initially, the young-looking photographer made an appearance on the television show “Adventures of Superman,” starring George Reeves. Later, he became the main character in his own comic book titled “Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen,” which was published for 163 issues from 1954 to 1974. Fast-forwarding 50 years, we find that Jimmy will once again be associated with The Daily Planet, but this time in James Gunn’s Superman movie.
Today marks the anniversary of Superman’s closest friend, Jimmy Olsen, as stated by Gunn, accompanied by a fresh behind-the-scenes photo shared on Threads. The portrayal of the character by actor Skyler Gisondo is set to leave you utterly astounded.
David Corenswet, known for his role in ‘Twisters’, and Rachel Brosnahan, famous from ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’, take on the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, two reporters at The Daily Planet newsroom. The sports reporter Steve Lombard, portrayed by Beck Bennett, is the jock of the team, while Mikaela Hoover plays Cat Grant, the gossip columnist. Christopher McDonald appears as Ron Troupe, another reporter, and Wendell Pierce, well-known for ‘The Wire’, takes on the role of editor-in-chief Perry White.
In the latest casting news, Gisondo, who portrayed Gwen Stacy’s younger brother in both The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), has been chosen to take on the role of Superman’s companion. Previously, Jack Larson played this role opposite George Reeves’ Superman in the TV series Adventures of Superman. Over time, this character has also been portrayed by Aaron Ashmore in Smallville, Mehcad Brooks in Supergirl, and David Kaufman in Superman: The Animated Series.
In the original Superman movies from 1978 to 1987, Marc McClure portrayed the character Jimmy. Later adaptations introduced Sam Huntington in Superman Returns of 2006, while Michael Cassidy appeared as Jimmy in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice of 2016. In this latter film, Jimmy was depicted as a CIA agent disguised as a Daily Planet photographer, who unfortunately got shot and killed by terrorists.
In the initial movie of the revamped DC Universe, titled Superman, we follow the narrative of Superman’s personal journey to harmonize his Kryptonian roots with his everyday life as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas. This extraordinary being symbolizes honesty, justice, and the American spirit, while embodying human compassion in a world that often views kindness as outdated.
As a die-hard movie fan, I’m thrilled to announce that my favorite superhero, Superman, is back on the big screen this summer! In this new adventure, we have Nicholas Hoult portraying the infamous Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced stepping into the role of Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi bringing Mister Terrific to life, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Don’t miss it when it hits theaters on July 11!
