As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who’s seen more Superman reboots than I can count, this Smallville trailer has me feeling like a kid again! The iconic Somebody Save Me theme is always a delight, and the cast looks promising. I must admit, I was initially skeptical about the return of those red trunks, but hearing James Gunn‘s reasoning behind their inclusion makes perfect sense. Superman isn’t just a superhero; he’s a beacon of hope, and that sentiment is beautifully encapsulated by the presence of those iconic shorts.
The opening sequence of “Superman” starts off with the well-known “Somebody Save Me” theme playing, as David Corenswet’s Superman makes his appearance on screen. Then we see Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, followed by Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. This is then followed by a series of clips.
Towards the end of the preview, there are glimpses of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and a brief glimpse of Metamorpho, followed by a build-up that concludes with the climactic scene from the initial trailer featuring Superman and Lois. The full video can be viewed above if you’d like to see it.
Smallville deviated from the traditional Superman storyline by introducing various costumed heroes before finally revealing Superman in his suit during the finale, and even then it was only for a moment. In contrast, this upcoming Superman project will take an entirely different approach to costuming. Here, Kal-El is already Superman, well into his superhero career, and he’s donning a costume that reflects the classic comic book suits, complete with the instantly recognizable red briefs.
Previously, in a chat with ComicBook, the director of Superman, James Gunn, shared the reasons behind the return of the trunks in the new costume design – a detail I originally resisted incorporating.
In the end, the argument wasn’t too intense overall; it got heated initially though. Gunn was on the side against trunks for quite some time. As Snyder was working on it, he experimented with countless versions of trunks, just as we did. Yet, I found myself repeatedly advocating for no trunks, no trunks, no trunks. Eventually, I thought let’s keep pushing for trunks and see how it goes. And David said something that truly resonated with me.
We experimented with numerous variations, even testing scenes with and without Superman’s traditional costume. During discussions, David emphasized that Superman aims to make children feel safe rather than afraid. After all, he is an alien with incredible abilities, capable of projecting beams from his eyes and even tipping over trucks. Yet, despite his immense power, which could seem intimidating, he desires to be well-liked. His goal is to serve as a symbol of hope and optimism,” Gunn explained.
