As a movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially skeptical when I heard about James Gunn‘s take on Superman. But after visiting the set and having a chat with the director himself, I can confidently say that this new Superman film is shaping up to be something truly special.
Fans of DC Comics are anticipating a balance between tradition and innovation in the upcoming Superman movie directed by James Gunn in 2025. However, Gunn’s take on the iconic character will also present an unexpected twist on a significant aspect. During a visit to the film set, Gunn shared insights into various elements from Superman’s past that have influenced his portrayal. These include Richard Donner’s original movie, Zack Snyder’s version, the DC animated universe, and the classic comic “All-Star Superman.” Nevertheless, Gunn highlighted that there will be several entirely new ideas featured prominently in the movie, such as how Superman’s relationship with Lois Lane is depicted.
In my opinion, the bond between David and Rachel’s characters feels incredibly authentic and unique. To put it simply, it’s a connection that truly resonates with who we are as individuals on-screen. Frankly, I can’t recall a similar dynamic in any other superhero film up until now.
Gunn went on to explain, “Their bond is complex, and we delve deep into it. There are extended sequences focusing on their connection and the dynamics between them. It’s intriguing to imagine how a hard-headed, skeptical journalist, who’s also extremely intelligent, would navigate a relationship with someone who has the ability to lift a skyscraper.
In the latest movie, director Gunn was vague when questioned about Lois Lane’s knowledge of Clark Kent being Superman. He simply said, “We’ll find out. Lois recognizes who Superman is.
One of the acknowledged inspirations for Gunn’s version of Superman is the comic “All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, which presents an unconventional approach to Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s romance. In this narrative, Lois remains oblivious to Clark’s secret identity as Superman until the end of the first issue. As the story unfolds, their relationship deepens amidst circumstances where Superman learns he has a limited lifespan. This intriguing portrayal suggests that the relationship between these characters may be destined for longevity, based on Gunn’s words and considering this is only the beginning of a new DC franchise.
It appears plausible that in Gunn’s latest film, Lois might realize that Clark is Superman, yet she must continue pretending that her clumsy Daily Planet colleague is actually the Man of Steel. In our conversation with Gunn, he offered a distinctive perspective on the Clark/Superman relationship, stating: “Gunn has presented an interesting twist on the concept of Clark and Superman’s duality in this movie.
In simpler terms, only a select few, including his parents, are aware of Clark’s true identity as Superman. To most people, they see Clark Kent and Superman as two separate entities. However, according to my script on the second page, I don’t subscribe to either perspective that Clark or Superman is the real person. Instead, I believe that knowing both identities is essential to understanding the true individual, which means not many people do.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
