The DC Universe is coming together quite well. Superman is about to reappear soon, marking his first live-action return to the big screen since a brief stint in 2023’s The Flash. James Gunn is putting in a lot of effort to ensure that his franchise steers clear of the pitfalls experienced by its predecessors, prioritizing quality over quantity – only approving projects that show promise. Despite some hiccups along the way, such as one project being scrapped, this is par for the course. After all, making progress often requires taking calculated risks.
Gunn prefers to tread cautiously with his words, avoiding jumping the gun. He’s open to chatting about projects such as Lanterns and Supergirl, which are well underway in production, and he’s also comfortable sharing updates on movies or shows that have already been made public knowledge. However, despite trying to maintain a low profile, Gunn finds himself subtly hinting at a project that holds his utmost fascination right now.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn hinted at upcoming projects for the DCU following the release of Clayface. He mentioned a favorite TV show that may be produced soon, as well as multiple movies in various stages of development. Although he couldn’t reveal specific details about these films, he did confirm that one is progressing well while another is still in its early stages. Additionally, Gunn himself is working on another project, which he believes can be discussed. However, the exact sequence isn’t set in stone yet.
Gunn’s response offers several insights, notably his mention of a new work in progress. However, this can be set aside for the moment since the TV series that Gunn refers to as his “favorite creation” undoubtedly holds great significance.

James Gunn’s “Favorite” DCU Project Could Be Anything
Entertainment Weekly’s article reveals that they spoke with James Gunn on May 22nd, which is significant as this interview took place before the announcement of the Mister Miracle animated series. In his capacity as showrunner, Tom King will adapt his acclaimed comic book run for the project. It’s possible that Gunn appreciates King’s work and is eager to see what he can create in a new format. Not limited to Mister Miracle, there are numerous characters and stories across the multiverse to explore instead.
Based on James Gunn’s previous projects, it seems likely that he would create a humorous character. For years, DC has been attempting to launch a Plastic Man project, and Ben Schwartz (known for his role in Sonic) frequently expresses his desire for the part. Additionally, there have been confirmed talks between Gunn and Chris Pratt about a role in the DC Universe. Since Gunn enjoys collaborating with familiar faces, he might be eager to involve Pratt. Neither Pratt nor Gunn have hinted at which character could reunite them, but many online discussions suggest that Pratt would make a good fit for Booster Gold, who has a TV series in development.
Regardless of who becomes the main character in Gunn’s preferred TV series, it’s clear they’ll be eccentric. Gunn takes great pride in showcasing lesser-known comic book characters, and it seems this practice isn’t likely to stop as the DC Universe expands.
