Approximately half a century has passed since the groundbreaking comic book crossover event called “Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man: The Battle of the Century” was released by DC Comics and Marvel Comics in 1976, marking the first instance of collaboration between these two rival publishers. Earlier, in 1975, they had jointly produced “MGM’s Marvelous Wizard of Oz“. Over the subsequent years, characters from both the DC and Marvel universes have met multiple times, with notable instances being the 1996 comic book series “DC Versus Marvel“, the co-owned Amalgam Comics imprint, the 1999 collaboration between Superman and Fantastic Four, and the upcoming collaborations between Batman and Deadpool (to be published by DC) and Deadpool and Batman (to be published by Marvel).
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve always wondered about the possibility of a comic book universe crossover… specifically, a DC and Marvel cinematic collaboration! The talented James Gunn, who has worked on both sides, having directed ‘The Suicide Squad’ for DC and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy for Marvel, has expressed interest in this concept long before his appointment as head of DC Studios in 2022.

We’ve gone over this topic numerous times. It’s definitely possible, but at the same time, I find it intriguing,” Gunn expressed to Rolling Stone in an interview featuring DC Studios co-chief. Interestingly, he has a copy of the ‘Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man’ comic book on his desk. “However, I also sense that people might be growing tired of it,” he added.
According to Gunn, what truly matters is presenting compelling narratives in superhero stories. People are interested in diverse types of stories featuring their favorite superheroes. It’s widely known that people adore superheroes, but they crave more diversity and better storytelling. Simply having Spider-Man and Superman together isn’t enough if the story is poor. For a meaningful connection to be made, it must come from an authentic place, which can be quite challenging to achieve.
Warner Bros. (the company behind DC) and Disney (the owner of Marvel) have teamed up on movies before, such as in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit, where characters from both Looney Tunes and Disney were showcased, even having Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse share the screen equally.
In order for the idea of a DC versus Marvel film to be approved by Gunn, it should serve a goal other than just earning profit.
Gunn expressed his reasons for working on the first DC Studios film, which he wrote, directed, and produced. He said, “I chose Superman because I adored the character and was thrilled about creating that movie.” When asked if he’d write a Superman versus Spider-Man movie, he pondered, “Would I find the idea exciting as a potential great film? Or am I considering it more because people are eager to see these two iconic characters together?
He mentioned that, in his opinion, any project we undertake should ideally be led by someone who genuinely believes it will be fantastic, not just for the money. He’s not fond of ventures driven solely by profit.
2021 saw Gunn disclose discussions about a potential Harley Quinn/Groot film with the leaders of DC Films (then led by Walter Hamada) and Marvel Studios (headed by Kevin Feige). “Everyone is open to all possibilities,” Gunn stated at the time. “However, whether anything will materialize remains uncertain. But the prospect of uniting Marvel and DC in a movie sounds exciting to me.
Later on, Gunn made it clear that he finds it unlikely but not entirely impossible. In his tweet, he expressed his preference for a powerful narrative over frequently observing crossovers and mashups.
DC Studios’ Superman, written and directed by Gunn, opens only in theaters July 11.
