As a film enthusiast with over three decades of watching and analyzing superhero films under my belt, I must say that James Gunn’s latest venture into the world of Superman has me more than just a little intrigued. Having grown up with Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, John Williams‘ iconic score will forever hold a special place in my heart. So, when I saw the animated poster for Gunn’s Superman leaning on that classic melody, it was like a warm, nostalgic hug from the past.
This week, an animated poster for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman project drew excitement using a timeless melody as its foundation. Specifically, it utilized a remixed version of “Superman — Main Theme” by John Williams from the 1978 Superman film starring Christopher Reeve. Prior to the trailer release, during a studio visit, Gunn shared with ComicBook and other media outlets his approach to selecting music for this significant production. Notably, Superman boasts an original score by composer John Murphy, who has collaborated with Gunn on recent projects. Although the poster featured a nostalgic nod, Gunn emphasized that the majority of the score is unique.
The filmmaker revealed that the music in this movie pays tribute to Williams and also features an exquisite score by John Murphy, a renowned composer. Unlike his previous works like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, Gunn opted for a different approach with the soundtrack in this project.
He explained, “This isn’t a collection of songs, but rather a score. In other words, the focus isn’t on the tunes. There are indeed some songs included within it, and I did select those tracks prior, but this movie is quite distinct from my past productions… The music, specifically the score, is what propels it forward. This film is more about the score rather than the songs.
In February 2024, Murphy was formally appointed as the composer for the upcoming film, Superman. His first collaboration with Gunn occurred on The Suicide Squad in 2021, when he took over from Tyler Bates, who had previously composed scores for many of Gunn’s films, including the initial Guardians installments. Murphy continued his partnership with Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Peacemaker, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Now, he is contributing to the launch of the DCU.
In the initial phase of promoting Superman, it’s not unexpected that Gunn is drawing on nostalgia. However, it’s logical to assume that the film will feature an innovative soundtrack. Given its significant responsibilities – expanding upon past representations of Superman while avoiding repetitions and familiar paths, all while establishing a cinematic universe – it has a lot riding on its success.
So far, our knowledge of the Superman story is limited, primarily focusing on the fact that it resumes when Clark Kent is approximately 25 years old. Furthermore, this narrative will introduce various DC characters, such as Hawkgirl (played by Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). James Gunn clarified to reporters that these characters are not mere cameos, but rather they form the “supporting cast.
On Thursday, December 19th, we’ll likely discover more once the complete trailer is released. The new Superman movie is set to hit screens on July 11, 2025.
