James Gunn’s Comments on DCU’s Wonder Woman Prequel Will Make Fans Happy

As a devoted fan of the DC Universe, having followed its intricate web of stories and characters for decades, I am thrilled to hear that “Paradise Lost” is in “very active development.” The prospect of delving deeper into the history and political intrigue of Themyscira before Diana’s birth is nothing short of exhilarating.

The popular TV series “Wonder Woman: Paradise Lost” is currently undergoing a great deal of progress, as confirmed by DCU head James Gunn. During a recent conversation with fans on Threads, Gunn provided updates on various DC Universe projects and the creative steps being taken for each one. When asked about the status of “Paradise Lost,” Gunn stated that it is in a highly active stage of development.

“Fewer people might – partly because she has multiple origin stories.” However, he didn’t reveal any details about Paradise Lost or if he intends to showcase Wonder Woman’s origin on the big screen.

In January 2023, “Paradise Lost” was one of the initial projects unveiled by Gunn and Peter Safran for the DC Universe. They revealed their vision for it during a press conference, likening it to a “Game of Thrones”-style story, set on Themyscira island before Diana’s birth. Fans assumed the show would draw inspiration from the comic series “Paradise Island Lost” by Phil Jiminez and George Pérez, which focused on a civil war occurring on Themyscira.

Safran commented, as reported by Variety, that the story is primarily about the secretive power struggles within a female-only community. Gunn further questioned: “What sparked this isolated female island? What are the hidden truths, both beautiful and ugly, behind it all? And how do the various influential figures maneuver and scheme within this society?

James Gunn Says Peacemaker’s Biggest DC Crossover Moment Is No Longer Canon (But How?)

Although there’s been a hint that “Paradise Lost” might be coming up for DCU, it hasn’t been a priority on their schedule so far. Instead, they’re launching their new phase this July with “Superman,” penned and directed by Gunn. Next month brings us Season 2 of “Peacemaker.” In June of 2026, we can look forward to “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” At the moment, there are six more movies and five more TV shows in development, but no release dates have been announced yet.

Although Gunn’s commitment to “busy” work on the series is reassuring, “in development” in TV terms often encompasses a wide spectrum of meanings. Generally, it signifies that the show has not yet been officially greenlit, and could potentially be cancelled with little financial repercussion for the network. Given the potential success of DCU, it’s likely that Wonder Woman will be integrated into it fairly soon. For now, fans are looking forward to the upcoming summer season.
