In all conditions, whether day is at its brightest or night its darkest, James Gunn will always have a keen eye on every screenplay related to DC Studios. Last year, the creator of ‘Superman’, who holds the position of co-chairman and CEO alongside producer Peter Safran at DC Studios, made it clear that they won’t start filming any project until the scripts are completely ready. He emphasized that he wouldn’t initiate shooting anything unless he’s fully satisfied with it. This principle even applies to a movie that had already been given the green light but was subsequently canceled because its script wasn’t suitable for production yet.
The project we were working on has been cancelled. Everyone involved was eager to produce the film, it had received approval and was set to start production. However, the screenplay wasn’t finalized yet, and since I can’t create a film with an unfinished script, it was called off,” Gunn explained to Rolling Stone.

It’s not specifically mentioned which DC Studios film Gunn referred to as being canceled, but it’s been widely reported that the Sgt. Rock movie, which was planned under the guidance of Luca Guadagnino, the director of Queer and Challengers, is no longer in production at the studio.
Based on reports from inside sources, the initial plan for a summer release of the World War II film had to be put on hold due to unworkable circumstances. The latest news suggests that they aim to commence production on Sgt. Rock in the year 2026.
In the role of headliner, Superman (created by Gunn) spearheads a DC Studios film lineup that comprises Supergirl (written by Ana Nogueira), Clayface (jointly penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini), and the follow-up to The Batman (authored by Matt Reeves & Mattson Tomlin). On the television front, season 2 of Peacemaker on HBO Max, scripted by Gunn, is underway. Additionally, HBO’s Lanterns series commenced production in February with a pilot script co-written by Tom King (Batman), Damon Lindelof (Lost), and Chris Mundy (Ozark) as the showrunner.
So far, we’ve hit the jackpot with the quality of our scripts. For instance, ‘Supergirl’s’ script was fantastic from the start. Then came ‘Lanterns’, and again, the script was top-notch. The same goes for ‘Clayface’. Essentially, we’ve been fortunate to have such great scripts, whether it’s good fortune or wise decisions, or a mix of both.
Nogueira has been confirmed as the screenwriter for an upcoming live-action Teen Titans movie, which wasn’t part of the initial DC Universe revealed by Gunn and Safran in 2023. Some projects that were initially announced but have since been delayed include television series like Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and Waller; as well as movies such as The Authority and Swamp Thing. As for Booster Gold and Waller, Gunn stated in December that they are not quite where he wants them to be at this point.
Director Andy Muschietti (known for “The Flash”) is set to direct the film provisionally titled “The Brave and the Bold.” The story, yet to be penned by an unspecified writer, will center around DCU’s Batman (Bruce Wayne) and Robin (Damian Wayne). As for “Wonder Woman,” as per Gunn’s recent updates, a new movie is being drafted, though the screenwriter remains undisclosed at this point.
Gunn stated that a movie will only receive approval once we have a final, satisfactory script and typically, casting won’t happen until the script is completed. This is why certain projects progress quicker than expected while others take their time. Quality will always come first in every case.
It’s uncertain if the concept for the movie that was killed stemmed from the creative minds at DC Studios, specifically those being King, Drew Goddard (known for Marvel’s Daredevil), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), Christal Henry (HBO’s Watchmen), and Christina Hodson (Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey).
