Two years have passed since James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their initial lineup of projects for the DC Universe to the public, showcasing titles such as “Creature Commandos”, the second season of “Peacemaker” and the upcoming “Superman”. Since then, numerous other DC productions have been announced, like movies featuring Clayface and Sgt. Rock. However, some projects have been put on hold, while others remain shrouded in mystery. During a press event for DC Studios that ComicBook attended, co-president and director of “Superman” James Gunn was asked about the original announcement slate from two years ago. Reflecting on his feelings about those announcements and expressing any regrets, Gunn also dropped a significant hint about the future of the DC Universe.
Gunn expressed that life can be intricate, with numerous small aspects. For instance, he regrets not handling certain situations differently or requesting a take to be done over from David (Corenswet). He referred to these as minor things. He also mentioned that there have been writers added to projects where he now wishes they hadn’t been included, but overall, he feels incredibly fortunate.
Ana (Nogueira) was part of Supergirl and delivered an exceptional script. Additionally, another one of his favorite projects, which no one knows about yet, has emerged over the past few months. This project remains a favorite despite its secrecy.
He added, “We’re a small team of 13 individuals who manage to create and maintain such high-quality material. We’ll undoubtedly make mistakes, but some aspects will be better than others. Our goal is to strive for the best in everything we do. I feel incredibly lucky about it.
According to Gunn’s statements, his fellow president Peter Safran also expressed similar opinions regarding the broader DC plans. In addition, he voiced his thoughts on the matter too.
Reflecting on where we are now, if we had predicted two years ago, while gathered here, what our output would be today, I believe we’d be taken aback by just how much we’ve achieved. This is especially true considering the five months when we were not working productively during our first year. Those periods were difficult for everyone, but looking back, we can say with confidence that we’re satisfied and optimistic about what lies ahead.
Let’s examine the upcoming DC Studios projects such as Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Teen Titans, The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. Additionally, there are TV shows like Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold. Notably, significant characters from the DC Universe play a role in all these projects or are their main focus. This suggests that James Gunn’s rumored favorite project, which hasn’t been announced yet, might revolve around a less popular character.
Based on James Gunn’s preferences for characters and the kinds of stories he enjoys telling, it’s possible to speculate that his upcoming DC project might take a surprising direction. It could involve offbeat choices like Detective Chimp or Animal Man, or something slightly more conventional such as Cassandra Cain as Batgirl or Adam Strange. The exact timing of when this rumored project of Gunn’s will be unveiled is uncertain, but given the positive buzz he’s already generated around it, anticipation will undoubtedly reach an all-time high once it’s officially confirmed.
