James Gunn’s Superman Skipping SDCC 2024 Because It’s “Too Soon” to Show Anything

Comic Con is usually a highlight of the year for me, a time when I can immerse myself in all things DC and connect with other fans. But this year, I’m disappointed to hear that James Gunn’s new Superman movie won’t be making an appearance at San Diego Comic Con.

I’m a big fan of DC and their exciting lineup, but unfortunately, James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film won’t make an appearance at San Diego Comic Con next year. The reason? According to Peter Safran, Gunn’s partner, they want to avoid the exhaustion that comes with promoting a movie for an entire year and potentially oversaturating the market. With SDCC scheduled from July 23rd to 27th in 2023, DC will indeed miss out on the opportunity to showcase their film there, but if it turns out to be a hit, they’ll still have a chance to celebrate its success just two weeks later at another event.

DC’s movie division won’t be attending San Diego Comic Con this year, but DC Comics as a publisher has some major announcements related to their new initiative, DC All In. Notably, James Gunn’s animated series “Creature Commandos” will debut as the first onscreen manifestation of the new DC Universe.

In Safran’s opinion, the timing isn’t right yet. A year is a significant length of time for a campaign in her experience. Therefore, they believe their efforts would be more effective if focused over a shorter duration, rather than prolonging it. That’s their preference on this matter.

As a seasoned film industry insider with years of experience under my belt, I’ve learned that the production process for a major movie like “Superman” is a complex endeavor, filled with numerous stages and intricacies. Based on the information provided, it seems that despite the film being nearly finished in terms of scripting and planning, director James Gunn hasn’t begun shooting scenes yet.

As a seasoned producer with a long history of bringing beloved stories to life on the big screen, I can relate to Safran’s sentiment. Every new project comes with its own unique set of challenges and pressures, especially when it’s your first foray into live-action theatrical experiences.

David Corenswet takes on the role of Superman in this production, while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane. The plot remains a mystery, except that it showcases a matured Superman who has assumed his position as the world’s guardian and enjoys the support of an extensive network of allies. This adaptation includes Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

Gunn is bringing together a team of proven talents for the project. Henry Braham, cinematographer of “The Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3,” is on board. Beth Mickle, production designer of “The Suicide Squad” and “Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3,” is also part of the crew. Judianna Makovsky, costume designer for “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Avengers: Endgame,” will be responsible for costumes. David Scott, art director of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” is joining as well. John Papsidera from “Yellowstone” and “Oppenheimer” is handling casting.

Superman flies into cinemas on July 11th, 2025.
