As a longtime fan of James May and his unique brand of humor, I must say I am thrilled about his new project, “James May and The Dull Men’s Club.” Having followed him from Top Gear to The Grand Tour, it’s refreshing to see him embark on a more laid-back adventure.
Since The Grand Tour has come to an end, its host, James May, is now embarking on a fresh endeavor – a new show titled “James May and The Dull Men’s Club” exclusively on Discovery+.
Drawing inspiration from online communities of unconventional thinkers, this program is designed to feature May as he innovatively tackles contemporary issues, for instance, experimenting with methods like cooking a casserole within a washing machine or using a sledgehammer to crack open walnuts.
Now, in an interview with TopMob magazine, the ex-presenter of Top Gear shares insights into creating the latest series, discussing any resemblances, or contrasts, compared to his past escapades.
When queried about creating James May and the Dull Men’s Club following The Grand Tour, May described it as “a shift from casual tinkering to putting in a day’s labor.
On our larger excursions, we usually had around 60 to 70 individuals joining us. Although they weren’t overly demanding, the atmosphere became quite hectic and pressured. Contrastingly, now there are only seven of us, making for a more laid-back experience.
Despite that relaxation, however, May did clarify that neither the show, or he himself, are “dull”, saying: “I don’t think it is dull! I’m a bit bored with the idea that men are dull because they like going into their workshops or lofts to make things or paint pictures.
I’ve had discussions with the producers and network regarding this matter, as my intention was humorous rather than serious. I believe that we shouldn’t employ it as a tool to criticize or dominate men, nor should we use it to suggest that the ‘age of the man’ is finished.
Essential masculine traits are at risk, often perceived as boring by some, yet we’re here to prove otherwise!
Recently, May also reflected on his former Top Gear years, defending the series from criticism.
In conversation with The Telegraph, May expressed: “Top Gear was deeply rooted in its era. People’s views on cars have significantly shifted. Nowadays, discussions about cars often lean toward politics.
It was strikingly candid. It reflected a perspective on life, somewhat skewed by individuals excessively preoccupied with automobiles.
