James May Defends Clarkson: Top Gear’s Sudden End Was Unnecessary!

James May, a former host of the popular BBC automotive program “Top Gear”, has openly shared his thoughts on the show’s conclusion, expressing that he felt it wasn’t necessary for it to come to an end at that time.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I find myself in agreement with John May’s recent statements to The Times. I believe that Jeremy Clarkson, a figure I greatly respect in the world of television, did not deserve the severity of the punishment handed down by the BBC.

He expressed the view that perhaps our Top Gear didn’t necessarily have to come to an end due to the circumstances. Instead, he believed that the issues could have been resolved and attributed them to some tension and impulsiveness under pressure, essentially.

The event took place, and it’s undeniably disappointing and unfortunate, but it shouldn’t have resulted in the downfall of something thriving… or alternatively, The incident occurred, and it’s truly disheartening and unfortunate, but it didn’t necessitate the fall of a flourishing entity…

To put it modestly, our show, Top Gear, was quite prominent and ranked among the most watched television programs globally during that period.

The atmosphere was rather charged at times, and given this, it’s not unexpected when things got a bit chaotic. If we were bands like AC/DC or Thin Lizzy, such events wouldn’t have been out of the ordinary.

In 2015, Top Gear stopped production temporarily as the BBC chose not to renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract following an incident involving producer Oisin Tymon. This altercation was reportedly caused by a dispute over the unavailability of hot food after a long day of filming.

During that period, an internal probe initiated by the BBC was spearheaded by Ken MacQuarrie, who held the position of Director at BBC Scotland.

The report revealed that, following an unexpected physical and verbal assault, Tymon sought medical attention at the Accident & Emergency department.

Oisin Tymon was hit during a physical assault, causing him to have a swollen and bleeding lip.

In my humble opinion, as a film enthusiast, I’d like to point out that, according to MacQuarrie’s report, this unfortunate event lasted roughly 30 seconds before being interrupted by a brave onlooker. However, the verbal assault on Tymon was prolonged, encompassing some of the strongest profanities and threats about termination I’ve ever heard in my movie-watching career.

During that period, Danny Cohen, the head of BBC’s television division, temporarily removed Clarkson from the program. However, this choice didn’t sit well with certain enthusiasts who advocated for his return to the show at the time.

Clarkson expressed his apologies once more to Oisin Tymon, acknowledging his regret not only for the initial incident but also for the unfortunate consequences that followed.

Let me emphasize once more, absolutely nothing that happened was his responsibility. Moreover, it’s crucial to understand that the mistreatment he’s faced since then is unjustified. I deeply regret that he’s had to endure such hardships.

“It’s great to see this issue settled. Oisin, who always added a spark of creativity to Top Gear, I hope he achieves tremendous success in his upcoming ventures.

Following Clarkson’s departure from the original show, both Hammond and May decided to step down as well. However, they found continued success in a new automotive series called “The Grand Tour,” which concluded its run last year.

Previously, the creator of the Prime Video series acknowledged that its termination, which has been quite successful among viewers, was due to the fact that it eventually reached a point where it could no longer continue indefinitely.

Last year, May explained to Yahoo UK that although it was a sorrowful decision, they opted to conclude the show to prevent it from being ruined.

He expressed that it was somewhat melancholic, and he acknowledged that many felt the same since it concluded, but it wasn’t meant to continue indefinitely, and everyone is starting to grow older.

We explored the concept quite extensively, leaving little room for further discussion. Consequently, we chose not to discard it but instead set it aside for future consideration.
