As a seasoned observer of the world of automobiles and British television, I must say that this article paints a vivid picture of James May’s life – a man who, much like his career, is as intriguing and multifaceted as the machines he adores. From his passion for engineering and aviation to his contemplative musings on tradition and society, it’s clear that May continues to evolve and challenge himself, just as he did when he embarked on the extraordinary journey that was Top Gear.
Following the conclusion of his last season on The Grand Tour, James May has returned to his workshop in Wiltshire. Inspired by the Dull Men’s Club, an online gathering, he’s been intrigued to tackle puzzles that one might not even realize existed.
Could May prepare a casserole inside his washing machine as he washes his clothes, could he break a walnut with a sledgehammer without shattering it into fragments – and might there be any practical application for a pencil stub that’s too short?
At 61, you’re being paid to mess about at home. Is this the dream?
It’s fantastic to reach this stage in life and continue earning a living through my exploratory journey. Regardless of the camera, I would find myself immersed in such activities. Sometimes, it feels as though I’m slipping back into my 12-year-old self, with an enjoyment for reading books, playing musical instruments, and creating things.
As a child, what sparked your interest in making things?
I struggled, and I still do, writing with a pen. Subconsciously I avoid anything that involves much writing in favour of things that are more practical, like Airfix and fixing bikes. I would never have made a living writing if I’d had to do it longhand.
After wrapping up the last episode of The Grand Tour, what was the experience like working on James May and the Dull Men projects?
The contrast lies in leisurely activities versus formal employment. On our large excursions, we often had around 60 to 70 participants. Although these weren’t overly demanding, they became quite taxing and stressful. However, here we are a small group of seven, which creates a more laid-back atmosphere.
Do you envisage more big adventures in the future?
Is this an admission that you’ve become, or have always been, a “dull man”?
I don’t think it is dull! I’m a bit bored with the idea that men are dull because they like going into their workshops or lofts to make things or paint pictures. I’ve argued with the producers and the channel about this – it’s meant ironically. I don’t think we should use it to beat men and say the era of “the bloke” is over. Some basic manly qualities are under threat. Many people mistakenly think it’s dull – but we’ll show them!
Is there a mental health benefit to creating and mending things?
Indeed, I tend to be restless and somewhat anxious in my movements, which seems to increase as I grow older. However, engaging in precise, detailed tasks such as assembling items or repairing them provides a soothing effect for me.
What are your criteria for choosing the show’s activities?
The task should be something a beginner like myself can manage. Initially, they proposed constructing a motorcycle from scratch, which I had to decline as it would require years of work. Some suggestions seemed uninteresting; for instance, organizing dishes in a dishwasher doesn’t seem to have any scientific principle or hidden truth behind it.
How much time do you spend in your shed?
A couple of afternoons and three weekday evenings each week find me alone at times, with my partner Sarah (an art critic and journalist) present occasionally, either writing or tending to our garden. I prefer these activities to seamlessly blend with our overall household routine. The stereotype of a woman embroidering in the living room while a man repairs a lawnmower in the shed is detrimental to a content home environment.
How do you split domestic duties?
Are we in danger of losing some traditional skills in the modern world?
I’m not convinced that certain skills are vanishing entirely. In my view, human capability remains vast and versatile. For instance, there are still individuals who know how to thatch roofs, operate lathes, or practice pargeting. The notion that we should encourage the young to learn these traditional activities like bell-ringing or morris dancing to preserve them is understandable, but if they cease to exist, it’ll be because there was a lack of interest. If no one cares for them, then their disappearance isn’t necessarily a loss. I believe many so-called “traditions” fade away, but the valuable ones persist.
What have you been working on lately?
A community organization named Navy Wings has provided me with some components for rebuilding the landing gear of a Hawker Sea Fury aircraft. These parts must be precisely crafted to undergo inspection and approval before use. Currently, I am working on shaping aluminum bronze using a lathe to create tail-wing bushes. Once completed, this plane will participate in historical air shows, and I’ll have contributed to its creation.
Are men hardwired to tinker?
It appears that it’s mostly men involved, but not every man shares this interest. Jeremy is an exception, as he doesn’t find this particular activity appealing. However, I dislike the term “man caves” because it implies we seclude ourselves to do trivial activities. In reality, many of us create fascinating things and contribute significantly to our society. Having women participate in the show would also be a delightful addition.
Have you been surprised by the longevity of Clarkson’s Farm?
Indeed, as he’s more theoretical than pragmatic, and has a strong aversion towards anything physically or manually demanding. This new endeavor seems to have provided him with a fresh sense of direction, which might have been long overdue. It could be an important turning point for everyone involved. Pausing to reflect on our true identities appears to be a shared experience among us all.

What’s your relationship like with Jeremy and Richard now you’re no longer filming The Grand Tour?
On several occasions, I’ve chatted with them and I feel that we might grab a drink together at some point – more as a casual get-together rather than organizing jokes, planning a journey, or discussing vehicles. It could turn out to be an intriguing experience.
Is it permissible for Jeremy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who were recently barred from a pub, to enter your establishment, The Royal Oak in Wiltshire?
We’re much more liberal-minded. A lot of the locals would have tough question

s for Starmer but that’s what the pub is for, it’s a forum for debate.
