56-year-old Jamie Foxx recently presented his pre-announced solo show, “One More Chance: An Evening With Jamie Foxx,” in Atlanta this month. Now, he’s taking time to reminisce about this memorable occasion, as it followed a challenging period of over a year since he experienced a serious, life-threatening health issue in April 2023.
In a post on Instagram dated October 3rd, he wrote, “God’s goodness fills me with unadulterated happiness as I share these images. The past two days, October 3rd and 4th, granted me a chance to express my perspective, and there was no more fitting location than Atlanta, Georgia.
He added, “I must express my gratitude to you all, Atlanta. You were there and you shone brightly. It’s been 18 years since I last performed on a stage, but I needed this platform, and I needed an audience brimming with nothing but pure love – and that’s exactly what you provided.
In the pictures he shared following his performances, Jamie seemed deeply moved. He was often seen burying his face in his elbow, lowering his head to the audience, embracing someone on stage, and speaking to the crowd.
Jamie explained, “When folks inquire if this is a stand-up comedy show, I answer no; it’s an artistic portrayal. This piece, unfortunately, stems from something that didn’t go as planned. However, I must express my gratitude to the wonderful people of Atlanta, particularly Piedmont Hospital, who helped me recover and return to the stage, where I can do what brings me the most joy.
Although the Academy Award-winning actor hasn’t disclosed much about his health crisis to the general public, he has offered glimpses into the terrifying ordeal he went through.
At an event held in July, Jamie revealed that he experienced a severe headache during the filming of the Netflix movie Back in Action, which was co-starring Cameron Diaz in Atlanta. He then asked his friend to fetch him some ibuprofen (Advil).
In no time, he found himself missing for a full 20 days, with no recollection of those days whatsoever.
Jamie acknowledged his daughter Corinne Fox and his sister Deidra Dixon for playing a crucial role in helping him seek medical care, thereby potentially saving his life. Following an injection of cortisone from the first physician he consulted, he remembered a second doctor indicating “there seems to be something happening up there,” as he gestured towards Jamie’s head.
“I won’t say it on camera,” he explained before trailing off. “But it was…”
In the following month, the actor from “Django Unchained” expressed similar thoughts in an Instagram birthday post he made for his sister.
In August, he wrote, “I wouldn’t exist without you,” implying that if you hadn’t made the choices you did, he would have perished.
Previously, the comedian had mentioned that he’d experienced a period of being unable to walk, which was related to the health issue he encountered.
Wow, I can hardly believe it myself! Just six months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to stand here accepting this Vanguard Award at the Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements in December 2023. In fact, I was barely able to walk! It feels surreal that I’m now standing tall and strong, surrounded by so many incredible artists who inspire me every day.
He added, “I’ve been through something. I’ve been through some things.”
Jamie also went on to share just how close he felt he’d gotten to losing his health battle.
He shared that he values each moment deeply now, as they are unique to him. He wouldn’t want his hardships to befall even his most bitter adversary because it’s grueling when the end is near. When he could glimpse the end, he could only see the tunnel – not the light ahead.
