After more than a year, Jamie Hayter, the former AEW Women’s World Champion, came back to AEW. This unexpected return was during the 2023 edition of the AEW All In pay-per-view. At this event, she confronted Saraya and her family who had disrupted the pre-show activities. Due to an injury, Hayter had to relinquish the title in May of 2023, after only six months of holding it. Now, she’s back, filled with determination, sporting a fresh new hairstyle and wardrobe, eager to demonstrate to everyone – including her fellow women wrestlers – what they’ve been missing.
During a recent chat with Renee Paquette on her show, Up Close, Hayter openly admitted she doubted her return to AEW. “At times, it wasn’t just the injury talking, but a deeper feeling of ‘I’m not sure I want to.’ It reached a point where I questioned, ‘Do I even want to do this again?’ I can’t quite pinpoint why. Maybe it was the pain and everything that transpired. I was truly uncertain. It felt like I needed to rediscover myself, find my purpose, and reignite my passion to get back into it.”
Jamie Hayter Thought Her Career Was Over
Regarding her injury, what was publicly disclosed was a serious back problem that would necessitate a lengthy recovery period. Nevertheless, fans remained optimistic on numerous occasions over the past year, anticipating her return. Hayter clarified that she had herniated not one but two discs in her back without realizing it until it became necessary for her to respond.
She described her situation as follows: “I suffered from a severe disc herniation in my spine, specifically two discs. I didn’t realize I had an injury until it became quite serious and I could no longer walk or stand upright comfortably. My body was bent at an awkward angle. I explained further that I couldn’t perform even the simplest actions such as laughing, sneezing, coughing, sitting down, standing in the shower, lying on my back. It felt like I had a sciatica initially, but it turned out to be much more severe.”
1. Every day, I visited the gym and practiced wrestling regularly. On my birthday, I decided to go skydiving because I felt fantastic that particular day. “I’m going to give it a try.” Afterward, “I wonder if I shouldn’t have done that.” I didn’t realize the severity of the injury until I found myself unable to walk. “The pain is unbearable all the time.” It often disturbed my sleep at night. “I wouldn’t want anyone I dislike to experience this misery” (paraphrased from Fightful).
Last week, Hayter stepped back into the wrestling arena, triumphing over Harley Cameron, who is Saraya’s trusted assistant. In her comeback speech, she conveyed her frustration with all the talking and expressed her readiness for combat instead. Hayter first emerged on AEW screens in 2019, working alongside Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D.. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was absent from television until her official signing with AEW in 2021. Fans quickly took a liking to her as she showcased an impressive and rapid climb up the ranks every week.
