Jana Duggar was always the bridesmaid, but she was ready to be the bride.
Jim Bob Duggar’s oldest daughter was the 19th child in his family to get married, tying the knot with Stephen Wissmann on August 15. She pondered over the sight of 11 of her siblings – all younger than her – walking down the aisle before her.
Jana, who is 34 years old, confessed to People magazine during an interview on August 15 that she is the eldest among her siblings. She expressed it has been discouraging at times, questioning if there’s something wrong with her or if she’s doing something incorrectly. Despite having prayed for this for many years, she often wondered why she hasn’t achieved what most of her siblings did, getting married in their early 20s.

As I strive to find the silver lining, I can’t help but yearn for that special someone who shares life’s journey with me. It hasn’t always been easy, but the struggle has been worthwhile and God has used this experience to teach me valuable lessons.
Now, Jana, whose sister – Jessa Duggar Seewald (aged 31) served as her maid of honor, while sisters – Jinger Duggar Vuolo (aged 30), Joy-Anna Forsyth (aged 26), Johannah Duggar (aged 18), and Jordyn Duggar (aged 15) were her bridesmaids, acknowledges that the wait for her husband was definitely worth it.
She pondered, “It seemed as though it would never happen, but now it’s becoming real. The weight of reality is settling in, and I find myself amazed, almost disbelieving. This is something I’ve longed for, and to witness it unfolding is nothing short of astonishing.”
Jana and Stephen first met around a decade back. At that time, Stephen was one of thirteen siblings and hailed from Nebraska. Their families coincidentally encountered each other during a snowstorm in Arkansas when Stephen’s family sought refuge with the Duggars. Now, both are 31 years old.
In time, they had a short-lived romantic relationship and decided to remain friends instead. An interesting twist came about when Jeremiah Duggar, aged 25, tied the knot with Stephen’s sister Hannah Duggar (née Wissmann) in 2022. More recently, this year, they reignited their connection.
Jana remembered thinking, “What on earth were we doing?” when the couple decided to rekindle their relationship. However, they realized, “We still find joy in each other’s company. We still deeply value one another.”
As for why Stephen checked all of Jana’s boxes?
“At first, I moved at a slower pace regarding it, but as time went by, his character, his return, and his unwavering love for me left me speechless. Even though our family is big and chaotic, and there are many things to deal with, I realized that not everyone puts up with so much. It struck me how remarkable it is that he does. Clearly, he genuinely cares for me deeply.”
