In the crime drama series MobLand on Paramount+, Tom Hardy plays Harry Da Souza, who is meant to be the main character despite his history of violence. However, there’s a significant issue with Harry’s character that the show has recently begun to tackle. Although details about Harry’s past have been slowly revealed, it’s become clear that he and the Harrigan family have known each other for decades, at least since Harry and Kevin were teenagers. Harry enjoys an extraordinary level of trust from Pierce Brosnan’s character, Conrad Harrigan, more so than even his son Kevin, let alone Brendan.
In the criminal empire of Harrigan, he appears to be the most trustworthy and competent figure, yet when it comes to his own family, Harry is less dependable. At the start of the series, ‘MobLand’, Harry and his wife Jan (played by Joanne Froggatt) are facing marital difficulties, with Jan turning towards couples therapy for help. Harry’s duties within the Harrigans prevented him from attending therapy, and it soon became evident that his work for the Harrigans was a significant contributing factor to their strained marriage. This issue, which has been largely ignored, finally surfaces in episode 6 of ‘MobLand’.
It’s No Longer Believable That Jan Stays With Harry In MobLand
His Livelihood Literally Endangers Her And Their Daughter
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve found myself deeply engaged with the character of Jan Da Souza from the get-go on MobLand. Her complicated relationship with Harry’s connections to the Harrigans has been intriguing, making her an alluring target for Alice, DS Fisk’s covert operative. Yet, it’s evident that their comfortable lifestyle, derived from Harry’s job, is something they both cherish. When Harry’s around, he shows nothing but kindness towards Jan and Gina. Given the presence of a daughter in their lives and at least 15+ years of shared love, it’s only natural that Jan would have patience for Harry’s dealings with the Harrigans.

In a turn of events, episode 6 brought about Jan’s deepest apprehensions coming true. The Da Souzas were compelled to hastily relocate to the Cotswolds due to a genuine threat to their lives following Vron Stevenson’s murder. It was always possible, but Harry’s involvement with the Harrigans now undeniably endangers both Jan and her daughter, casting doubt on her long-term intentions to stay with Harry. To add insult to injury, the supposedly safe haven they find themselves in is under the control of an unstable elderly gangster who had previously shown inappropriate behavior towards her 16-year-old daughter, making the situation even more precarious.
Jan May Finally Be Giving Up On Harry In MobLand
One Moment Points To Her Lingering Doubt
Jan had reached the end of her tether due to several incidents: Harry’s persistent refusal to accompany her to therapy, their unexpected arrival at Harry’s friend’s houseboat, and Conrad’s harassment in her own home. The final straw was when Harry, desperate for their safety, took them to Conrad’s home. This series of events seemed to be the catalyst for Jan’s decision to end her marriage with Harry, as she demonstrated clearly when an anxious Gina confronted her about their lifestyle.
As a film enthusiast, I found myself deeply moved by a scene where Gina directly asked her mother if she still loved her father, Harry. The response from Jan was not immediate, and it was evident that acknowledging her feelings aloud was a struggle. Eventually, she drew Gina close and gently told her not to be foolish. To me, the fact that she couldn’t even express her love for Harry directly to their daughter served as a poignant reminder of how deeply entrenched Jan had become in her relationship with him – a testament to the complexities of human emotions.
Is There Hope For Jan & Harry To Make Things Work?
It Seems Unlikely So Long As Conrad Is Around
In the midst of a raging gang war with the Harrigans, I find myself thrust onto the frontlines, leaving no room for me or my wife, Jan, to focus on our marriage. The situation seems dire, and it appears that the only viable option is for me to sever ties with the Harrigans. My dear friend Gina has even proposed a daring escape plan involving her mother, us three, fleeing together. Unfortunately, my loyalty lies with the Harrigans at this moment, and with Conrad’s grip on my skills as a fixer still tight, I fear I will continue to be distant from Jan and our daughter.
