Japan Sales Charts: There Are Just Two PS5 Games in the Entire Top 30

Nintendo maintains its stronghold in Japan as demonstrated by the recent data on physical game sales (courtesy of Gematsu).

2024 saw Nintendo Switch dominating my gaming world in the last few weeks of the year, with barely any other titles making a significant appearance. However, in the week that ended on January 5th, 2025, Astro Bot managed to squeeze into 20th place and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake made it to number 30. Interestingly, during the previous week (ending December 29th, 2024), only Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake could be found in the top 30, holding the 25th position.

In both weeks, about half of the games at the top 30 list on each platform were exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Although some of these games are also available on other platforms, a significant number of them are original creations by Nintendo themselves.

In these past two weeks, the Nintendo Switch family outperformed others in sales, accounting for a total of 186,277 units. On the other hand, PlayStation 5 consoles, including the PS5 Pro, managed fewer sales, amounting to 73,810 units. This trend seems consistent across both hardware and software markets.
