Over a span of fifteen television seasons, the horror-fantasy series delved into the depths of mysterious monsters, urban legends, religions, and beyond. Brothers Sam and Dean Winchester constantly crisscrossed the nation on the hunt for every unearthly creature that caused nighttime disturbances. Despite the intense drama, frightening moments, and sibling tension, Supernatural never hesitated to poke fun at itself.
The series reached the pinnacle of meta episodes with ‘The French Mistake,’ which is not only the most self-referential but also one of the funniest, as well as being a favorite of Jared Padalecki.” The humorous real-life element in this episode is provided by tweets from Misha Collins.
“The French Mistake” Is Jared Padalecki’s Favorite Episode of Supernatural
“For Whatever Reason, Our Life Is a TV Show.”
The French Mistake” begins with Balthazar handing Sam and Dean a key and transporting them to an alternate world. What follows is their arrival at Bobby’s house, where they unexpectedly burst through the window and find themselves on a movie set. Here, they discover that they are actually the main characters in a TV show called Supernatural, complete with jabs directed at the actors, crew, and even the creative team, including director Robert Singer, creator Eric Kripke, and then-showrunner Sera Gamble.
Episode | Title | Air Date | IMDb Rating |
---|---|---|---|
6×15 | “The French Mistake” | February 25, 2011 | 9.6/10 |
Sam and Dean find themselves unwittingly immersed in the worlds of their real-life counterparts, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. It seems there’s tension between these two, which the brothers aim to unravel as they explore the lives of their famous doppelgängers. As they delve deeper, they uncover some intriguing details: Jared owns an alpaca and a grand portrait depicting himself on horseback, while Jensen has an aquarium in his trailer and once starred in a soap opera. They also stumble upon the mysterious “J-Squared’s” wallets. In a mischievous turn of events, Sam and Dean decide to use the actors’ credit cards to purchase the necessary components for a spell.
The episode was uproariously funny, offering a stark contrast to the tough and perilous background of the brothers. From watching Sam and Dean struggle with acting, to overhearing the crew laugh about Sam and Dean trying to kill an extra, to Eric Kripke walking directly into gunfire and getting shot several times before falling, “The French Mistake” is undeniably one of the best episodes, and it’s no surprise that it’s not only Jared Padalecki’s favorite, but also Misha Collins’ and Eric Kripke’s.
Misha Collins Actually Posted His Character’s Tweets
“You Guys. You Really Punked Me. I’m Totally Gonna Tweet This One.”
In “The French Mistake,” one notable aspect is that Misha Collins added an extra layer of meta by tweeting as his character during the episode, which happened when Fake-Misha posted online while the show was airing.
When Sam and Dean struggle with their acting lines, Misha becomes increasingly irritated by the multiple takes needed for the scene. At a convention, he jokingly admitted that he wanted to “amp up the character as much as possible.” He brushes off one crew member and ignores another. During a filming pause, Misha posted another witty tweet a few hours after the first. The fake Misha account also sent out an additional tweet saying, “Ever get that feeling… Someone’s in the backseat? Frowny face.” Unfortunately, the angel who followed Sam and Dean was, indeed, sitting in the back seat.
In another version of events: Virgil suddenly appeared and threatened Misha with a knife before he had the chance to send his message. Following this incident, Virgil used the act of dimension-jumping (which we never got to see in reality) as a metaphorical ending for their story, symbolized by an unposted tweet.
