Jasmine Guillory has a knack for weaving various romance tropes into her stories, ranging from gradual romantic developments to complex love situations like love triangles, and everything in between.
In her own creative flair, Guillory has even penned some works herself. Notably, her acclaimed 2018 novel titled “The Proposal” presents Nikole, who finds herself in an unexpected predicament when her boyfriend of five months proposes to her in a public setting. However undesirable and surprising this event may be, it sets the stage for an enchanting mystery as Nikole is whisked away by a stranger, Carlos. In due course, their connection deepens in an unconventional spin on the classic tale of strangers becoming lovers.
Over the years, Guillory has penned down seven captivating novels, each featuring diverse and intriguing characters immersed in suspenseful, sometimes complex, romantic scenarios. However, a common theme seems to recur in her works.
Gosh, I’m utterly smitten with the allure of fake dating! Speaking to TopMob News at the 30th Annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, I couldn’t help but express my ardor. If given the chance, I’d pen another tale of this captivating genre in an instant. However, I fear overdrawing from this rich well. Yet, the joy I get from reading and writing it is immeasurable. I simply adore the thrill it brings!
And as for her least favorite? There’s a few that Guillory wouldn’t mind breaking up with.
As an ardent fan, I must confess my preferences veer away from the Secret Baby and Enemies-to-Lovers tropes, which seem to be popular favorites among many. Yet, these storylines often leave me feeling disheartened as they initially portray characters being downright cruel towards each other. However, in the gifted hands of a skilled author, I find myself intrigued by any trope.
Guillory’s ninth book, “Flirting Lessons,” released now, delves into a novel concept for many readers – love coaching. The narrative revolves around Avery, a recently single individual eager to discover her bisexuality and embark on romantic adventures. Into her life steps Taylor: a successful winery owner from Napa Valley, infamously known as the town’s greatest heartbreaker following his recent breakup.
As a hopelessly smitten admirer, I gladly share my insights into the art of flirting with Avery. Little did I know, the pupil would soon outshine the master as I found myself captivated by Taylor’s charm instead.
Apart from being a fresh concept for Guillory, “Flirting Lessons” marked her debut as an author exploring a queer romantic narrative. Yet, despite its novelty, the act of breathing life into their love story felt instinctive to her.
Guillory shared that her writings often come from a female perspective, making it effortless for her to create characters who do the same. She found this process enjoyable. In the story, Avery is having her first significant queer encounter, though she’s known she’s bisexual for some time and has only had male partners previously. This aspect of the plot also provided an engaging twist as Guillory considered both characters’ viewpoints.
At present, Guillory is immersed in composing the sequel for the Flirting Lessons series, aiming to deepen the bond between characters Avery and Taylor, and potentially introduce fresh romance themes.
In the meantime, keep reading to discover more romance novels to add to your TBR list…
