I, Jason Isaacs, enthusiastically backed my successor in the Harry Potter franchise this week. Previously, I portrayed Lucius Malfoy in the film adaptations of these beloved books, and HBO recently revealed that Johnny Flynn will step into the role for their upcoming TV series adaptation. Interestingly enough, Flynn and I have collaborated before, and let me tell you, my admiration for him runs deep. While attempting to keep things light with a touch of self-deprecation, it’s undeniable that I am genuinely thrilled to see Johnny take on this significant role. He will bring his unique interpretation to a character I played for nearly a decade, and I can’t wait to see the outcome.
Isaacs remarked, ‘He’s an exceptional actor, a wonderful person, and unfortunately, he’s also quite talented musically.’ Handing over the torch to no one else would have been ideal. However, I hope he won’t be asked to perform music…
An exceptional actor, a charming individual, and, unfortunately, possessing extraordinary musical skills as well. There couldn’t have been a more fitting successor for the baton with the snake-topped handle. However, let’s avoid making him perform a song…#HarryPotter #JohnnyFlynn#EndTheElfSongEarly

In the 2021 film “Operation Mincemeat,” Isaac and Flynn collaborated, providing us with the assurance that Isaac’s endorsement is rooted in genuine experience. On Monday, Warner Bros. unveiled Flynn’s role, along with other fresh talents for the Harry Potter series: Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia, Daniel Rigby as Uncle Vernon Dursley, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. Additionally, they announced several new child stars: Lox Pratt portraying Draco Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown for the series.
Lately, Isaac has been faced with numerous inquiries regarding the upcoming remake of Harry Potter, particularly concerning who will portray Lucius. One response he provided was “Meryl Streep,” but it’s unclear if his statement was sincere or not. In the same interview, he stated that he wouldn’t offer any guidance for the actor taking on Lucius, saying, “I wouldn’t have any advice at all” and added humorously, “Why should I bother? I know some of the talent they’re casting already. They’re exceptional actors. This project is going to be amazing, and they don’t need advice from an old timer like me.
This year, Isaac has found himself immersed in numerous press engagements. First, he showcased his role in The White Lotus Season 3, followed by the premiere of his latest film The Salt Path. During these media appearances, Isaac has been eager to chat about Harry Potter, but has steered clear of discussing author J.K. Rowling and her stance on transgender rights. However, in 2022, he did express his thoughts on the matter, stating that he wouldn’t publicly criticize her without first having a private discussion with her. It remains uncertain whether or not they’ve had such a conversation since then, leaving many fans curious about how the cast of the new series will address this sensitive topic.
Currently, the reimagined Harry Potter series is being filmed, with a planned release date around 2026. You can catch the cinematic retellings right now on Max.
