I’ve had the privilege of embodying a variety of legendary characters, such as Lucius Malfoy, Captain Hook, and most recently, captivating viewers with my performance in HBO’s The White Lotus. However, my work in voiceovers has also made a significant impact, including portraying Command Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels from 2014. Among these roles, it’s the Grand Inquisitor who stands out most in the Star Wars animated universe, posing a grave threat to the Jedi duo within the Ghost crew – Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger. Throughout the first season, my Grand Inquisitor relentlessly pursued Kanan and Ezra, earning himself a place as a formidable, if not unconquerable, adversary, seemingly destined to be the series’ main antagonist.
Instead, viewers were taken aback as the Grand Inquisitor fell in the final episode of the initial season.
The Grand Inquisitor Was an Important Piece of the Empire’s Plans
In the initial episode of “Rebels,” titled “Spark of Rebellion,” we are introduced to The Grand Inquisitor, a powerful user of the dark side who commands an Imperial unit known as the Inquisitorius – a group tasked with hunting down Jedi. This crew, consisting of Hera Syndulla, Chopper, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren, Zeb Orrelios, and Ezra Bridger, primarily operates on the planet Lothal in the Outer Rim. Their growing acts of defiance against the Imperial presence on Lothal eventually catch the eye of the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB). However, it is only when Kanan reveals his identity as a Jedi that the Grand Inquisitor, who surpasses any ISB agent in skill, is summoned.
Throughout the entire first season, the storyline primarily focuses on Kanan and Ezra’s constant efforts to evade the Grand Inquisitor, who is extraordinarily skilled at his duties and always manages to catch up with them. The game of hide-and-seek reaches its peak in the Season 1 finale titled “Fire Across the Galaxy,” where the Grand Inquisitor finally captures Kanan. With Kanan about to be transported to Mustafar, a notorious location known for being the place Jedi go to perish, the crew of the ship Ghost embarks on a daring rescue mission to save Kanan before he can be taken away to Mustafar by the Grand Inquisitor.
In the end, the team manages to rescue Kanan, but he and Ezra find themselves confronting the Grand Inquisitor. Throughout the season, they had evaded his attempts to capture or eliminate them. Finally, Ezra and Kanan make their last stand. The battle is intense due to the Grand Inquisitor being a formidable enemy and the survival of both characters was uncertain from a storytelling perspective. The Grand Inquisitor’s mastery of lightsaber combat is unmatched, and he swiftly overwhelms Ezra, who is still in training as a padawan. This leaves two scars on Ezra’s face. Believing his apprentice to be dead, Kanan has nothing left to lose and responds to the Grand Inquisitor’s provocation, revealing his full Jedi power. As a result, he disarms the Grand Inquisitor and forces him to cling to a ledge. True to his Jedi nature, Kanan extends a hand to his adversary.
Death Was a Preferable Option for the Grand Inquisitor
Regarding the significant role of the Grand Inquisitor in the storyline of Rebels, it seemed predictable that Kanan would capture him or they would keep fighting. However, unexpectedly, the Grand Inquisitor warns Kanan, “There are things far worse than death,” before plunging off a ledge and meeting his fiery end. This moment left both Kanan and viewers in shock. Yet, the true meaning of the Grand Inquisitor’s last words becomes clear when Darth Vader personally appears on Lothal to deal with the Rebel uprising.
During the first season, the Grand Inquisitor is portrayed as an unbeatable and powerful adversary, making his early demise in the series seem impossible. But when we learn that Darth Vader stands as the backup for the Grand Inquisitor, the gravity of the predicament faced by the Rebels becomes crystal clear. For a Jedi or an Imperial foe, there’s nothing more dreadful than encountering Darth Vader.
The Grand Inquisitor’s demise sets off a chain of unstoppable occurrences that eventually determine not just the destiny of the Ghost team, but also the course of the entire galaxy.
