As a die-hard comic book fan who has spent countless hours poring over issues and watching both DC and Marvel films, I am beyond excited about Jason Momoa playing Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow! The idea of an actor transitioning from one iconic DC character to another is simply mind-blowing.
I remember the days when Momoa was just Aquaman, a character I adored but never thought he’d surpass. But then, he brought his unique charm and edge to the role, elevating it beyond my wildest expectations. Now, seeing him take on Lobo, a character he openly admitted being his favorite, fills me with anticipation.
I can just imagine Momoa’s Lobo, striding across the screen, that signature scarf flapping behind him, a menacing grin on his face. And let’s not forget the dialogue – who wouldn’t want to hear Momoa deliver some of Lobo’s iconic one-liners?
As for the joke, well, I can already picture Momoa in his Lobo costume, looking at the camera and saying with a wink, “I heard there was a role going around for an antihero. Said it was something about a green lantern… but I thought, ‘that’s a bit too bright for me!'”
Can’t wait to see this on the big screen! Let’s keep the conversation going on Bluesky @KnightofOA!
In an exciting twist for DC fans, The Main Man, popularly known from previous comic book adaptations, will step into a new role in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The character Lobo, traditionally unfamiliar territory, will be portrayed by Jason Momoa, who has previously played Aquaman. This marks a unique shift in the world of comic book films as Momoa becomes the first actor to transition from one DC character to another on the silver screen. Although there are instances of actors moving between DC and Marvel or even within Marvel, none have made the leap from one DC film to another – until now. Momoa is also the only known figure from the previous DC movie universe to join this new cinematic universe, at least for the time being.
It’s intriguing to observe how Jason Momoa will portray these contrasting characters, as Aquaman and Lobo are poles apart in their personalities. Momoa has infused a certain grit into the role of Aquaman, but he remains an unwavering hero. On the other hand, Lobo is essentially a mercenary with his ‘best’ days being relatively good-natured, and things only deteriorate from there. Previous appearances have shown that he may occasionally align with the heroes, yet this partnership usually serves some personal agenda of his.
As a lifelong comic book enthusiast, I can wholeheartedly say that Lobo has always been my ultimate favorite character. Over the years, I’ve amassed quite the collection of comics, but it’s Lobo who truly stands out in my memory. Now, if anyone could possibly bring this iconic anti-hero to life on the big screen, I firmly believe it would be Jason Momoa.
I remember vividly when he mentioned during an interview with Fandango that he had always wanted to play Lobo, and his passion for the character was evident in his words. To me, it feels like fate – it’s almost as if this role was tailor-made for him. If Momoa were ever given the opportunity to don the mantle of Lobo, I have no doubt that he would deliver a performance that would leave fans breathless.
So, to anyone who shares my enthusiasm for this potential casting, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that one day we’ll see Momoa as the ruthless, unstoppable Lobo on the silver screen. It’s a match made in comic book heaven!
In the past, a few actors have transitioned from Marvel to DC’s film franchise, and both Zachary Levi and Ben Affleck were part of the previous DC cinematic universe. Levi, who was previously known for his role as Fandral in the Thor movies, took on the character Shazam! in the initial movie and its sequel. On the other hand, Affleck portrayed Daredevil before the Marvel Cinematic Universe started, and later switched to DC where he played Batman in Zack Snyder’s universe.
Ryan Reynolds, who initially starred as Green Lantern in the DC movie universe, later transitioned to the Marvel world, becoming the beloved sarcastic anti-hero Deadpool. The latest film featuring this character, paired with Wolverine, was one of the top box office hits in 2024, indicating that Reynolds’ decision to join the Marvel franchise was undeniably successful.
Previously known for his role as Jonah Hex, Josh Brolin later took on the character of Cable in Deadpool 2. Notably, he also portrayed the main antagonist Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making his time with Marvel stand out significantly over his tenure as Jonah Hex.
As a long-time fan of comic book movies, I’ve witnessed the incredible transformation of actors’ careers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One such example is Chris Evans, who played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise before the MCU was even a glimmer in Disney’s eye. However, once the MCU came into being, he was cast as Captain America, becoming the symbol of an era that revolutionized superhero filmmaking. It’s fascinating to see how actors like Evans can switch between roles and achieve such great success.
On the other hand, we have David Harbour, who brought the character of Hellboy to life outside of the big two (Marvel and DC) before joining the MCU as Black Widow’s co-star. Now, he’s returning to the MCU in the highly anticipated Thunderbolts project, demonstrating how versatile actors can be within this genre.
The journey of these actors serves as a testament to the power of adaptability and the boundless opportunities that the comic book movie industry offers. I eagerly await their future performances and the continued evolution of the genre.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that the actors you see on the big screen are merely a fraction of those who have portrayed characters in both DC and Marvel productions on television. For instance, Creature Commandos boasts two such collaborations with Frank Grillo and Sean Gunn, both of whom have starred in numerous Marvel films throughout their careers. This isn’t the only example of this trend, and it’s intriguing to imagine who else might be brought together for future projects.
