As a seasoned comic book aficionado who has been following DC’s most iconic characters since the days of my youth, I must say that the news of Jason Momoa playing Lobo in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” fills me with both excitement and nostalgia. While I was initially disappointed when Emmett J. Scanlan’s portrayal of Lobo on Krypton went largely unnoticed, I now see it as a prelude to Momoa’s upcoming performance.
Having watched Momoa bring Aquaman to life with his rugged charm and imposing physique, I have no doubt that he will embody the raw power and unbridled ferocity of Lobo. The character design for Lobo in Krypton was a refreshing take on the classic DC space biker aesthetic, but Momoa’s physique practically demands a return to the big-budget VFX space hog of old.
I eagerly await the opportunity to see Momoa breathe new life into this infamous character and hope that his portrayal will do justice to the dynamic and fun character that Lobo has always been. In the meantime, I highly recommend streaming Krypton on Tubi for a taste of what’s to come and to witness Emmett J. Scanlan’s memorable performance as Lobo.
And as a side note, I can’t help but wonder if Momoa will manage to top Brad Garrett’s iconic animated portrayal of Lobo in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. Only time will tell, but for now, I’ll leave you with this joke: What did Lobo say when he saw a mirror? “I’m the best-looking motherf***er in the universe!
The announcement that Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman before, will portray Lobo in DC Studios’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie has sparked increased curiosity about this notorious character. Known for his crude language and role as an intergalactic bounty hunter (or sometimes anti-hero), Lobo boasts powers rivaling Superman. Many comic book enthusiasts are familiar with him from decades of Lobo comics that often pushed the boundaries of the Comics Code Authority (CCA); others recognize Brad Garrett’s animated depiction of Lobo from Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. However, it is likely that few fans are aware that Lobo has previously made a live-action appearance, as this occurred in a project that received little attention.
A Live-Action Lobo Appeared In Krypton Season 2
In the second season of Syfy’s prequel series, “Krypton,” which aired in 2019, the character Lobo, portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan (known from “Peaky Blinders”), made his live-action debut. This show focused on Seg-El, the grandfather of Superman/Kal-El, and his involvement during a crucial period of Kryptonian political unrest. During Season 2, Seg and his time-travel companion Adam Strange (played by Shaun Sipos) were captured by Lobo on the planet Colu as they sought to uncover Brainiac’s origins. Simultaneously, Lobo was seeking revenge against Brainiac for annihilating his homeworld of Czarnia – a punishment inflicted upon Lobo after he had killed off other Czarnians to claim it for himself.
In a departure from the usual portrayal of Lobo, the character hailing from Krypton was an uncontrollable, invincible maniac. At one point, he displayed his uncanny ability to survive by shooting himself into fragments that pierced a defensive energy barrier and reformed his torso on the other side! The design for Lobo in Krypton’s comics blended the traditional DC cosmic biker appearance with the leaner ‘Skinny Lobo’ concept from the 2010s “Rebirth” comic era. Although there are no sketches to verify Jason Momoa’s Lobo appearance, his muscular build strongly suggests that he will embody the classic version of Lobo – a tough, cigar-chomping figure with a massive space vehicle for traversing the universe.
Over the course of only four appearances, Emmett J. Scanlan demonstrated that Lobo is a versatile and entertaining character on-screen, and he managed to portray him effectively even within TV budget constraints. His impressive performance serves as another compelling reason for DC fans to watch Krypton, where they can discover all the other captivating ways this series enriches Superman’s history.
Krypton is streaming on Tubi.
