Jason Sudeikis Pays Tribute to His Late Uncle, Cheers Star George Wend

Jason Sudeikis is raising a toast to his late uncle.

A week following the death of George Wendt, who played Norm Peterson in the popular NBC sitcom “Cheers”, his comedian nephew paid a heartfelt tribute to him on May 20th, when he was 76 years old.

During the Big Slick Celebrity Weekend for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Missouri on May 30, Ted Lasso star stated that contrary to the common saying “they let you down” when referring to heroes, this individual is not like that. He described him as just as enjoyable, kind, and welcoming as any character he portrayed on television or in movies.

49-years-old, who has children Otis (11) and Daisy (8) with ex-partner Olivia Wilde, acknowledged that Wendt was a significant inspiration. He encouraged the individual to pursue acting seriously if they truly had passion for it.

In essence, his uncle’s career, which ended, served as a demonstration of commitment, since he managed to secure his breakthrough role on “Cheers” in 1982, which was almost ten years after making his first appearance in the 1970s.

He not only maintained a strong bond with his family and heritage, but also with the places that were significant to him. This included Chicago, his hometown, as well as Kansas City, where he had spent time, such as during his uncle’s graduation from Rockhurst University. Furthermore, he often frequented a bar named Mike’s, possibly amassing around 18 academic hours there.

The actor known for “We’re the Millers” playfully suggested that George Wendt’s legal career at the Missouri Bar served as a stepping stone for his long-running role on “Cheers,” which he starred in for all 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993.

“We miss him greatly,” Sudeikis added, “and I love him dearly.”

The homage didn’t stop at that point; in fact, all the famous attendees of the Big Slick event joined together to sing the iconic theme song from “Cheers”. Moreover, Jason made a heartfelt gesture by donning a jersey adorned with his uncle’s surname during the baseball game segment of the fundraiser.

Sudeikis’ affection for Wendt wasn’t overlooked; even the late actor acknowledged his nephew in one of his last interviews from June.

On the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Wendt expressed, “He’s an exceptional child. I’m very proud of him. Not just because of his success, but also because he’s reliable. Have you read about him? He is truly a wonderful person, intelligent, and considerate.
