Jason Watkins, David Morrissey and more join BBC Radio 4’s Dickensian season

As a seasoned connoisseur of both literature and British radio drama, I must say that the upcoming BBC Radio 4 productions of Dickensian classics has me thoroughly enthused! Having spent countless hours poring over dusty tomes in quaint libraries and huddled around radios during my youth, the prospect of experiencing these timeless tales anew through the medium of audio drama is a delightful proposition.

A group of well-known actors will come together to present fresh audio adaptations of timeless Dickens novels for the BBC, as has recently been revealed.

In the upcoming season for BBC Radio 4, three distinct adaptations of Charles Dickens’ timeless stories are scheduled for release, honoring one of literature’s most celebrated figures.

Starting towards the end of this month, we’ll be premiering a selection of audio dramas. Among them are “Hard Times”, “Little Dorrit”, and “Our Mutual Friend”. These stories feature several well-known talents.

The novel “Hard Times” is portrayed as a critique of a society that prioritizes productivity over creativity, suppressing art, curiosity, and imagination. It will feature David Morrissey from Sherwood, Shaun Dooley from Changing Ends, along with Rachel Harper, Jan Ravens, Ike Bennett, and others in its cast.

According to its summary, the new audio drama, inspired by Charles Dickens’ 11th novel “Little Dorrit,” takes a humorous jab at the institutions of government and society. It specifically targets the Circumlocution Office, a bureaucratic department that seems to exist solely for the advantage of its inefficient staff members, and the debtor prisons where individuals were held without the ability to work until they paid off their outstanding debts.

In a new adaptation of “Little Dorrit,” actor Jason Watkins, famously known for his role in McDonald & Dodds, will take on the dual roles of Charles Dickens and Rigaud. Joining him will be Samuel Barnett, Kitty Archer, and Paul Bradley as well.

In the end, I found myself immersed in an audio production titled “Our Mutual Friend,” inspired by Charles Dickens’ last novel. Known for its witty humor and sharp portrayal of Londoners navigating life without wealth, this story includes several deaths, financial ruin, themes of money and filth, deceit, honesty, and ultimately, a positive resolution.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that this fresh adaptation of the classic story is being released to celebrate its 160th anniversary since its inception! Boasting an impressive cast including Bukky Bakray from The Strays, Sule Rimi from Andor, and the talented Gordon Kennedy known for his role in Robin Hood, this production promises a captivating experience.

Speaking about the upcoming radio dramas, the head of speech and Radio 4, Mohit Bakaya, expressed his excitement, stating that as the world’s largest producer of original audio dramas, the BBC is thrilled to rejuvenate these cherished stories for the enjoyment of Radio 4 listeners.

Apart from writing fiction and journalism, Charles Dickens was an avid performer who frequently brought his stories to life by acting them out for his admirers during widely attended public reading tours. His novels were crafted with both sight and hearing in mind.

As a devoted movie reviewer diving into the realm of audio dramas, I’ve come to realize why these tales resonate so profoundly within this unique format. It’s no secret that the BBC cherishes and champions audio dramas – a beloved medium by our listeners. Our unwavering dedication is reflected in our continuous investment, ensuring that timeless classics like those of Charles Dickens remain accessible, while also nurturing fresh, contemporary writing. So, whether you’re an aficionado of classic literature or eager to discover the latest literary gems, there’s a place for everyone in this captivating world of audio drama.

Hard Times will be released on BBC Radio 4 on 29th September.
