> The eerie rhythm you’re hearing isn’t the ominous melody from John Williams’ famous Jaws theme, but rather the sound of film producers eyeing a potential remake with interest, much like sharks. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 movie, an adaptation of Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel about a man-eating shark that causes havoc in the summer town of Amity Island, is not just a masterpiece. Even after 50 years, this groundbreaking thriller, which launched the blockbuster era, is still widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
According to David Koepp, an experienced screenwriter and producer who has worked with Spielberg on projects like the 1993 film “Jurassic Park”, it’s not a good idea for filmmakers to consider remaking Jaws due to its iconic status.
In the Empire Magazine’s special 50th-anniversary issue about Jaws, Koepp expressed deep regret for anyone attempting a remake of the classic film. He stated that replicating it would be impossible, as there have been other excellent ocean-themed movies. However, he strongly advised against trying to recreate the iconic Jaws.
There have indeed been follow-ups to the original “Jaws”, and unfortunately, each one seems to be less appealing than the last. In the second film, titled “Jaws 2” (released in 1978), police chief Martin Brody, who has a fear of water, found himself on a boat named “Orca”. He was accompanied by shark hunter Quint (played by Robert Shaw) and marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss). Despite successfully killing the first shark, Brody had another unwanted run-in with a second one according to his contractual obligations.
The film directed by Jeannot Szwarc, which was the sequel to Spielberg’s critically acclaimed and financially successful blockbuster, earned money but received far less praise than its original counterpart. The third installment of the Jaws series, set in SeaWorld, was directed by Joe Alves in 1983, while Joseph Sargent helmed the 1987 sequel Jaws: The Revenge, where Ellen Brody (played by Lorraine Gary) confronted a vengeful shark.
The fourth and concluding “Jaws” movie is likely most famously known for this frequently repeated quote from fellow actor Michael Caine: “I’ve never watched the movie, but I hear it was awful. But I have seen the house that it financed, and it’s fantastic.” (In a 2010 interview, Caine joked about a possible “Jaws 5”: “I refused it. The pay wasn’t high enough.”)
This way, the text is more conversational and easier to understand for readers while still conveying the original meaning.
2024 saw National Geographic unveil “Jaws @ 50,” a captivating, feature-length documentary chronicling the creation of the iconic film as it marks its golden anniversary this summer. As someone who appreciates the art of storytelling, I’m thrilled to share that this documentary will delve into the untold tales behind the book’s inception and the tumultuous filmmaking process – from budget overruns, schedule delays, faulty mechanical sharks, weather complications, and seasickness, to the struggles that defined its production.
Moreover, the documentary promises to shed light on the current state of sharks and our oceans by featuring insights from individuals who have dedicated their lives to the study and preservation of these magnificent creatures. This aspect will serve as the backbone of this fascinating journey into the world of Jaws and its lasting impact.
In collaboration with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Documentaries, the 50th anniversary special of “Jaws” is scheduled for broadcast this summer across National Geographic. The show will also be available for streaming on both Disney+ and Hulu platforms.
