As a dedicated follower of these remarkable women and their journeys, I must confess that Hoda Kotb’s retirement announcement took me by surprise just as much as it did Jenna Bush Hager. After five years of sharing laughter, tears, and life stories with Hoda, her departure feels like losing an old friend. However, in the spirit of these strong, resilient women, I believe that Hoda is embarking on a new chapter, not saying goodbye but merely stepping back to embrace fresh opportunities.
Jenna Bush Hager didn’t see Hoda Kotb’s retirement coming.
Over two months have passed since the host of the Today show revealed her intention to step down from her position, and now her fellow co-host for the fourth hour has shared insights into how she processed this news.
During the Dec. 5 episode of her Open Book with Jenna podcast, Jenna candidly shared with guest Matt Rogers that she was genuinely taken aback, expressing, ‘I was truly surprised.’
60-year-old Hoda recently shared her decision to leave on air, September 26th, expressing her desire to devote more attention to her two young daughters, Haley (age 7) and Hope (age 5). Despite working together for five years with Jenna, who is 43, the news came as a surprise, and Jenna mentioned she didn’t have much time to process it before it was made public.
She shared with me a week ago about her decision, she said. What I appreciate about Hoda is that she always follows her instincts, making choices that might seem unexpected to others but are perfectly suited to her. This is what truly impresses me about her.
However, as Hoda’s last day on air draws near – it’s January 10th – Jenna has accepted the reality of saying goodbye to her partner on-screen.
After giving it some thought, she said, “Now it all makes sense to me.” Initially, when people were expressing their congratulations, it felt as if I had been left behind, not in a serious way, but more like she’s prioritizing her own needs. However, I understand that. Yet, my heart has been slightly hurt.
Apart from Jenna, Savannah Guthrie, who shares anchoring duties on the first hour of the NBC show with Hoda, has also expressed finding Hoda’s departure tough. In fact, Savannah had earlier shared with TopMob News that Hoda is “irreplaceable.
Nonetheless, Craig Melvin is confidently prepared to step in for the initial hour.
In an interview with TopMob News in October, she expressed her gratitude by saying, “I believe our luck lies in having such a strong team at NBC. It’s not just about one or two individuals. We’re a collective, a family. I’m very content knowing that the show is stable and doing well.
