Pam Beesly, known for her role as receptionist Pam on The Office, believes that the show’s later seasons, following Steve Carell’s departure, weren’t as poorly received as we tend to recall. Although the show undeniably underwent changes after Carrell, who played Scranton Regional Manager Michael Scott, left, Fischer argues that the quality and humor of The Office didn’t suffer significantly. Alongside her co-star Angela Kinsey, Fischer has revisited each episode in the popular podcast Office Ladies and completed their rewatch in October 2024.
On the recent broadcast of the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, which is hosted by comedy veterans Dana Carvey and David Spade, Fischer spoke up in defense of the later seasons of “The Office.” He explained to Carvey and Spade that his main impression after re-watching it was that the show remained excellent throughout. Fischer also shared that there was a popular belief among fans that the two seasons following Steve’s departure were not as strong, but upon revisiting all episodes, some of his favorite stories unfolded in Seasons 8 and 9 when Steve had already left.
Fischer Names Favorite The Office Seasons and Standout Episode
Steve Carell’s absence on The Office was deeply felt, but Fischer makes a valid argument that later seasons of the show remained compelling. In fact, after Carell left, some highly talented comedians stepped into his shoes – James Spader took on the role of the upper management character Robert California, and Catherine Tate joined the cast as the manipulative Nellie Bertram.
During an interview, Fischer expressed that seasons 4 through 6 of “The Office” were her preferred era of the show. Interestingly, even though she and the rest of the cast and crew felt they were going through a rough patch during these seasons, it turned out to be a period she really enjoyed.
Fisher mentioned that it seemed like some award nominations ended after Season 3, leading her to speculate that they might have subconsciously believed their work wasn’t as impressive. However, she fondly remembered the “Dinner Party” episode in Season 4 and shared that she was in good company appreciating this one. Directed by Paul Feig, the episode showcased the tumultuous relationship between Pam and Michael, a dinner party that turned out to be quite disastrous. Additionally, Fisher also admired the Michael Scott Paper Company storyline that spanned throughout Season 5.
Will Fischer Return for the Upcoming Office Reboot, The Paper?
During her conversations on Fly on the Wall, Fischer freely shared her views on The Office and various aspects of her career. However, there was one topic she carefully guarded – the upcoming series The Paper, a spin-off from The Office – about which Fischer remained tight-lipped, even when prompted by Carvey and Spade, stating that she is forbidden to disclose any information about it.
The upcoming series will trace a documentary team as they hunt for a fresh subject, having previously documented “The Office”. They discover their new focus in a struggling Midwestern newspaper and its publisher’s endeavor to revitalize it with volunteer journalists. Domhnall Gleeson, Tracey Letts, and Mo Welch are set to feature in the series, and it is confirmed that Oscar Nuñez, a beloved “The Office” actor, will reprise his role. As for Fischer’s involvement, no details have been shared yet about her possible appearance on “The Paper”, but she did disclose she was able to pay a visit to the set.
As a fortunate observer, I was granted exclusive behind-the-scenes privileges, allowing me to engage in enlightening conversations with every actor. Witnessing their work firsthand was an unparalleled experience; truly, the whole setup is nothing short of amazing.
The film is set to debut on Peacock in September. Until then, let’s hope for a special appearance by Fischer in the production.
