Jenna Ortega doesn’t always want to give two snaps to her iconic role.
Before the second season of “Wednesday” premieres on Netflix this summer, the 22-year-old actress confessed that at times she finds herself feeling constrained while portraying the title character, as she has matured into an adult.
In a chat with Harper’s Bazaar, published on May 28, I shared that I’ll be embodying a character as a schoolgirl for quite some time. Yet, it’s crucial to remember, I’m not just playing this role; I’m also navigating the complexities of being a young woman in real life.
She went on, ‘The way you’re dressed reminds me of a school uniform. It feels condescending to me. And, when you’re small in stature, people literally look down upon you.’
In light of the observation that boys may be given more leeway, the Scream actress faced the challenge of meeting the heightened expectations and scrutiny that came from portraying a young, eccentric character, thereby shaping public perceptions of her.
Jenna clarified, “If a girl doesn’t maintain the initial impression you had of her, some might think, ‘Perhaps she’s not quite the same anymore. Maybe she has made changes that seem unusual or unfamiliar to us.’ This could lead people to say, ‘It seems like she’s altered herself significantly, as if she’s made a compromise or given up something important.’
She mentioned, “These women are going through crucial phases in their lives, and they’re exploring new things because that’s a natural part of growth.
Certainly, the actress who rose to fame on the “Stuck in the Middle” show – a role she landed at only 13 years old – enjoys challenging people’s perceptions of her by embracing a wide range of roles that are both diverse and unconventional. Although portraying the iconic Wednesday Addams can sometimes make her feel undersold, this character also presents unique creative possibilities for her.
Jenna mentioned that she seems to have a stronger affinity for Gothic styles now compared to her teenage years. She’s always had a liking or been intrigued by darker things, but as a child, she was more of a Disney fan, focusing on being cheerful, kind, and excessively sweet.
It’s peculiar about the character Wednesday; she’s both an outcast and a renowned figure in popular culture,” she explained. “In a way that may seem odd, I find myself resembling a popular actor – if you understand my meaning. And that’s not something I ever envisioned for myself.
Furthermore, while carving out her unique niche in Hollywood, the actress from “Death of a Unicorn” affirmed her readiness for characters that are mature, daring, and distinctly different.
Jenna expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards her audience,” she continued, “and mentioned her desire to reciprocate their support. However, she also emphasized the importance of pursuing creative endeavors that personally satisfy her.
In my professional journey, I strive to strike a harmonious blend between projects that resonate with my audience and those that ignite my own passion. Moreover, it’s essential for me to create a diverse portfolio, showcasing unique aspects in each role I take on.
