As a diehard fan of the Cloverfield franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement with JJ Abrams’ latest project on the horizon. The prospect of Jenna Ortega joining Glen Powell in this mysterious film under Bad Robot is sending shivers down my spine.
JJ Abrams’ upcoming movie is gathering its actors. Earlier this year, Glen Powell was confirmed as part of the team, and now there are reports that Jenna Ortega might join too. Not much has been disclosed about the film, except that it was bought by Warner Bros., is being produced under Abrams’ Bad Robot production company, and JJ Abrams himself wrote the screenplay for this project.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but get excited when I hear rumors that Bad Robot might be working on a direct sequel to the legendary movie we all know as Cloverfield. Even though it has spawned two in-universe sequels – 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox – there’s yet to be a true follow-up. Matt Reeves, who directed the original film, hinted last year that he’d be thrilled to revisit this franchise one day.
“Reeves mentioned he’s unsure if there will be a continuation of the series, but he’s thrilled at the prospect. He can’t share details due to the secretive nature of Cloverfield productions. Honestly, he never knows what projects he’ll take on. Despite his genre-focused work, he needs a personal connection to it. Cloverfield taps into his own anxieties.”
He went on to explain, “The method captivated me, it showed me how to handle the scene, discuss with actors about its essence, as it was like finding a way to balance reality and fantasy within this genre. If another tale arises that stirs a similar response in me – ‘I must tell this story’ – then I wouldn’t rule it out entirely. While I can’t guarantee it will happen, I would never completely dismiss the possibility.”
It’s plausible that the Abrams project might be unrelated to the Cloverfield series, instead being a completely fresh intellectual property. According to Deadline, who initially broke the news, all we know so far is that it doesn’t incorporate time travel as part of its storyline.
