Jennifer Saunders and Jack Whitehall star in….

As a cinephile with a penchant for literature, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s “Night & Day.” The ensemble cast, led by the brilliant Jennifer Saunders and Jack Whitehall, promises an enthralling performance that will undoubtedly resonate with audiences.

Jennifer Saunders and Jack Whitehall are currently filming the TV adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel “Night & Day” in Newcastle. This screenplay has been written by Justine Waddell, known for works like “Falling for Stradivari” and “Force of Nature Natalia.” The series is being directed by BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi, who has previously worked on productions such as “I Am Nasrine” and “Queen Cleopatra.

Jack Whitehall, Jennifer Saunders, Sally Phillips, Misia Butler, Alex Macqueen, Simon Phillips, and Frances Barber are part of the main cast. Jack Whitehall is known for his roles in Jungle Cruise, Decline & Fall, and Good Omens. Jennifer Saunders is recognized from Death on the Nile, Sumotherhood, and Allelujia. Sally Phillips gained fame through Love at First Sight and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Misia Butler is known for Kaos. Alex Macqueen has been seen in The Inbetweeners as Neil’s Dad, but he’s also appeared in numerous other productions like Downton Abbey. Simon Phillips is recognized from The Witcher. Frances Barber is well-known for Goal!.

As previously announced, Haley Bennett (known for her roles in Widow Cliquot, Cyrano, and Girl on a Train) will take the lead role. Joining her will be BAFTA winner Timothy Spall (recognized for his work in The Sixth Commandment, The King’s Speech, and the Harry Potter series), British singer Lily Allen (famous for How to Build a Girl), and German superstar Elyas M’Barek (known for Fack ju Göhte, This Crazy Heart, and The Collini Case).

The story unfolds during a time when glass ceilings were as solid as concrete, and Bennett will portray Katharine Hilbery, a woman who dared to reach for the heavens. Based on what is referred to as Virginia Woolf’s most humorous novel, Night and Day is an “unromantic comedy” that revolves around a fervent astronomer determined to avoid romantic entanglements and marriage. The narrative maintains a modern vibe, with Katharine’s courageous defiance of the Edwardian patriarchy serving as a contrast to the suffragette movement, scientific breakthroughs, and technological advancements at the turn of the 20th century.

Woolf is recognized as a key contemporary author from the 20th century, known for her innovative modernist writing style. Her works have been translated into more than 50 different languages. One of her earlier novels, “Night and Day,” delves into the intricate connections between love, marriage, contentment, and prosperity.
