Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley on 32 years of Absolutely Fabulous: “You could push boundaries a bit”

As a cinema devotee who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of celluloid dreams, I must confess that Absolutely Fabulous holds a special place in my heart. Having grown up in the vibrant ’90s, this bold and brash comedy was more than just a refreshing breath of fresh air; it was a cultural revolution.

32 years back, Absolutely Fabulous made a splashy debut on our screens, overflowing with vibrant ’90s attire and champagne Bollinger – a fact that left many stunned and amazed.

Originally, it aired on BBC2, which resembled Channel 4 back then – a place where creative freedom was more accessible, Jennifer Saunders shares with TopMob. “There wasn’t much anticipation. Certain male executives weren’t overly enthusiastic about female intoxication… but the show managed to attract viewers.

In more than just a modest observation, over the course of five series, specials, and a film, the adventures of PR guru Eddie (Saunders) and her companion Patsy (played by Joanna Lumley), transformed into a cultural sensation.

Currently, they are reminiscing about the show’s standout moments with the creators, actors, and notable admirers such as Saunders, Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, Ruby Wax, and numerous others for the documentary titled “Absolutely Fabulous: A Look Behind the Scenes.

Producer Owen Braben explains, “We didn’t just want to focus on people’s favorite parts of Ab Fab; we aimed to preserve the countless cherished moments that the cast and team hold dear as well.

For your information, you’ll discover a set of previously undisclosed polaroid photos provided by makeup designer Jan Sewell. These photographs were snapped as references during the shooting of this week’s episode on TopMob.

Reflecting on it now, it took courage to have such a predominantly female cast, as the characters’ behavior wasn’t conventionally accepted – I believe that audience hadn’t witnessed women displaying such antics before, according to Jane Horrocks, who portrayed Eddie’s vivacious assistant, Bubble.

Saunders clarifies that the creation wasn’t deliberate; it was more about providing laughter and portraying characters authentic to their world. Eddie and Patsy weren’t intended as role models, rather, they were meant to evoke a sense of unease in viewers.

Upon receiving the initial script for Absolutely Fabulous, I was astonished by its hilarity and uniqueness,” notes Lumley. “I believe its longevity stems from the fact that people enjoy a good laugh, and these two dreadful characters offered an expansive platform for humor.

I truly believe that our rehearsal spaces, filled with Jane, Julia, and the delightful June [Whitfield], were the epitome of joy on this planet. Nowadays, I find myself being offered champagne everywhere I go, all thanks to Jennifer, not to mention Edina and Patsy’s enthusiasm for Bollywood. Here’s to you, sweeties!
