Jenny Sparks #1 Review: A Realistic Spark of Inspiration

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast who’s been around since the dawn of time (or at least since the 90s), I must say that Jenny Sparks #1 has left me quite intrigued! It’s not every day we get to see a character like Jenny, who’s as sharp-tongued as she is resolute, taking on the big names in the superhero world. Tom King’s knack for crafting unique and compelling characters truly shines here.

For two decades, Jenny Sparks has been a staple at DC Comics, and now she’s back in “Jenny Sparks” #1, teaming up with The Authority hero. This comic is penned by Tom King and illustrated by Jeff Spokes. It’s intriguing that this new release coincides with James Gunn’s plans to adapt The Authority for the big screen through a movie. However, the comic isn’t merely a bid for relevance or nostalgia. Instead, it seems like the inauguration of something grander than just Jenny Sparks, the Spirit of the 20th Century, making her comeback. Whether all these elements ultimately coalesce into something significant remains to be discovered.

Jenny Sparks kicks off the narrative by making introductions. We encounter Jenny alongside four individuals from diverse backgrounds, each harboring personal problems and secrets. Initially, they appear to be ordinary folks, but things take an intriguing turn when Batman unexpectedly crashes the scene following Jenny’s one-night stand. The reason? Captain Atom has turned renegade, and it seems that responsibility falls on Jenny’s shoulders.

As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate King’s knack for crafting authentic characters, and Jenny is no exception. She’s got a sharp wit and isn’t afraid to dish it out, yet she never crosses the line into caricature. She’s straightforward, decisive, and unapologetic about her feelings towards the so-called heroes who shy away from tackling the significant challenges that lie ahead.

My only real concern with Jenny Sparks #1 is that while the comic book sets things up and establishes the players on the page, there are already some signs this will get needlessly complicated and quickly. With four key side characters in play from the jump that inevitably intersect, the story is already poised to be a balancing act. However, even in the first issue it can be difficult to keep the stories straight. Part of that is how the panels are arranged and the story is presented, but part is also in the way we’re only given snippets that feel, in the final pages, almost too convenient. There’s some heavy-handedness in trying to explain to the reader who Jenny Sparks is that doesn’t do an especially good job of making the reveal, as it were unless you’re already familiar with the character.

Setting those points aside, the narrative appears to be getting off to a promising beginning, as it presents an intriguing mystery that encourages further reading and a lead character who is compelling enough to keep readers engaged.
