Jeremy Renner Explains Why Hawkeye Season 2 Didn’t Happen (And It Will Make You Mad at Disney)

Actor Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye in Marvel productions, discusses why a second season of the series never materialized. During an interview on the “High Performance” podcast, Renner shared that he declined the opportunity due to a dispute over pay. Specifically, Disney proposed a salary for Season 2 that was only half of what Renner earned during the first season, which he found unacceptable and decided not to participate. It’s important to note that it was Disney’s accountants, not Marvel Studios, who were responsible for this disagreement.

In his own words, Renner stated, “They invited me to work on Season 2 and proposed a reduced payment. I responded, ‘Since it will require twice as much effort for half the pay, and approximately eight months of my life to complete, I’m not sure it’s worth it if I’m only getting half the compensation.’

Later on, Renner referred back to his traumatic snowplow incident as he tried to understand Disney’s offer, which was significantly lower than expected. “I thought to myself, ‘Excuse me? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because of the accident? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I earned during the first season,'” he expressed. “Please note, this isn’t about Marvel. This is just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s the penny-pinchers, the accountants… Unfortunately, I still have affection for the character. I’d still love to be a part of it, but I had to stand up for myself. I didn’t ask for more money, mind you. All I asked was to be paid what I made during the first season. So, it’s disappointing that this wasn’t possible, but I can accept it.

Following his role as Clint Barton/Hawkeye in five movies during the Infinity Saga, Renner starred in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye”, which debuted in 2021. The show introduced Hailee Steinfeld’s character Kate Bishop, who becomes Clint’s protege. In February of this year, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum mentioned that they were considering a potential second season of “Hawkeye”, as the storyline and character interactions seemed fitting for further exploration.

It’s not just Renner who had salary disagreements with Marvel; actors like Carrie Coon (Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Endgame) and John Malkovich (upcoming role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps) also faced such issues. Malkovich rejected earlier Marvel offers, feeling the compensation didn’t match the effort he’d put into the role. Moreover, Djimon Hounsou, with many notable credits under his belt, has openly discussed his ongoing financial struggles.

Despite the recent news about actors’ salaries, Jeremy Renner’s disclosure is quite unexpected. Known for his significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its initial phase, it’s disappointing that Disney only managed to provide him with half of the pay for an extensive shoot. This was despite the fact that the second season of Hawkeye might have given more focus to Kate Bishop, reducing Clint Barton’s role. However, there seems to be no valid reason why Renner shouldn’t have earned the same wage, and he absolutely has a right to his stance. Marvel productions are known for their time-consuming nature, limiting other projects Renner could pursue. Given that he was prepared to postpone other creative ventures to return to the MCU, it’s reasonable that he wouldn’t agree to do so at a lower price.

It’s uncertain if Jeremy Renner will continue as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye, is still an active Avenger in the Multiverse Saga, Renner wasn’t included among the confirmed actors for Avengers: Doomsday. However, Marvel has hinted at more casting announcements, so it’s possible that Renner could be part of the team. The production issues surrounding Hawkeye Season 2 may have made him hesitant to return, but he maintains a good relationship with Marvel. Fans eager for Hawkeye to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes shouldn’t lose all hope; there’s still a chance that Disney will work things out with Renner and offer him an attractive salary to appear in Doomsday or Secret Wars.
