Jeremy Renner, known for his roles in Marvel, discusses the genuine factor that led him to momentarily step back from the franchise. In an interview on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” while promoting his memoir titled “My Next Breath: A Memoir,” Renner shared that he chose to take a break so he could devote quality time to his daughter, acknowledging that the intricate and lengthy nature of Marvel productions would have made it difficult for him to balance acting and fatherhood effectively. Interestingly, family was also a key reason behind his decision to stop featuring in Mission: Impossible films.
Impossible because of this commitment. However, he’s happy with the decision he made and cherishes his role as a dad. Despite taking a step back, he’s still able to work and now that his daughter is older, he can make more flexible choices – perhaps even reprising his role as Hawkeye again.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Jeremy Renner’s portrayal of Hawkeye was a crucial part of the Infinity Saga, being one of the founding members of the Original Six Avengers. Across five films, including three Avengers installments, Renner brought Hawkeye to life. His character has also been significant in the Multiverse Saga, taking center stage in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye”. The series finale saw Clint Barton’s protégé, Kate Bishop, proving her heroic abilities, but Hawkeye continues to be an active character within the MCU.
As a die-hard film fan, I can’t help but ponder about Jeremy Renner’s potential future with Marvel Studios. Lately, Renner himself has spilled the beans that he declined the chance to star in Hawkeye Season 2 due to contractual disagreements over remuneration. Disney proposed a pay cut of half what he made for Season 1, which wasn’t acceptable to him. Furthermore, Renner was not among the 27 actors officially confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, but he seems open to rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the conditions were favorable.
It’s not necessary to be a parent oneself to empathize with Renner’s choice to take a break from Marvel. Spending quality time with one’s child is valuable, and Renner prioritized being present for his daughter. However, this does not mean he has abandoned acting entirely – he will appear later this year in “Wake Up Dead Man”. Instead, he has become more discerning when choosing roles, as blockbuster productions like Marvel or Mission: Impossible can consume significant amounts of time during filming, often lasting for months. Renner’s decision to decline Hawkeye Season 2 may be better understood in this context; if he was going to spend a prolonged period away from his family, he wanted it to be worth the sacrifice.
As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’m heartened to hear that Jeremy Renner is keeping the door open for a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. While there may be some hurdles to overcome following the Hawkeye contract situation, it’s comforting to know that Renner hasn’t completely closed the chapter on his time with the franchise. With the Multiverse Saga nearing its conclusion, I can only hope that we might see Hawkeye again before the final curtain falls. Even if Renner doesn’t appear in the upcoming Doomsday film, perhaps he could find a role in Secret Wars instead. It would be odd to imagine Hawkeye, who played such a crucial role in the Time Heist and helped bring down Thanos, sitting out the battle against Doctor Doom.
