Jeri Ryan Turned Down a Seven of Nine Series (But Not Star Trek: Legacy)

As a dedicated Star Trek fan with decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that the prospect of a Seven of Nine spinoff series has me positively beaming. Jeri Ryan’s portrayal of this complex character has been nothing short of captivating since her introduction on Voyager, and to see her continue to evolve in Picard was truly a delight.

Recently, the universe of Star Trek has experienced significant growth, joining other popular franchise worlds in the battle for streaming dominance. On Paramount+, viewers can enjoy live-action series such as Discovery, animated series like Lower Decks and Prodigy, and high-profile spinoffs like Picard and Strange New Worlds. While many of these projects have sparked debate, one anticipated series that unfortunately never materialized could have been a guaranteed success.

Recently at Spacecon in San Antonio, Texas, actress Jeri Ryan, known for her roles in Star Trek: Voyager and Picard, disclosed during a panel to the gathered audience that conversations have taken place about a potential Star Trek spinoff series focusing on her character Seven of Nine. In fact, she shared that a formal pitch for such a show has been presented to her as well.

After ‘Picard’ concluded, an intriguing concept was proposed to me that wasn’t the ‘Legacy’ series fans are anticipating. However, it didn’t resonate with me – it simply didn’t feel right. But remember this about Star Trek: nothing is ever set in stone. The future remains unwritten.

Seven of Nine’s Star Trek History Explained

Originally known as “Annika Hansen,” Jeri Ryan’s character Seven of Nine was a colonist who boarded a spaceship with her family to explore uncharted cosmic territories. Unfortunately, they encountered the Borg and were assimilated into their collective hive mind. In the Season 4 two-parter “Scorpion” of Voyager, the Borg incarnation of Annika (designate: “Seven of Nine”) joined the crew of the USS Voyager as a representative, but was ultimately captured and cut off from the collective.

For several years, Seven of Nine was a crew member on the starship Voyager; in the timeframe of Star Trek: Picard (more than 20 years following Voyager’s events), Seven of Nine transitioned into a Fenris Ranger, handling peacekeeping duties in the tumultuous Romulan Neutral Zone. She embarked on fresh journeys alongside Jean-Luc Picard (portrayed by Patrick Stewart). The narrative eventually led to Seven of Nine assuming command of the USS Enterprise-G, with her partner Raffi Musiker serving as first officer, and Picard’s son Jack Crusher II taking up the roles of ensign and advisor.

What’s Next For Seven of Nine?

Fans of “Star Trek” generally found themselves pleased with “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3, as it revived iconic characters from “The Next Generation” (TNG) and intertwined them with the new cast members like Seven of Nine, Raffi, among others. The series also introduced the children of TNG characters, such as Jack Crusher and Geordi La Forge’s daughters, Sidney and Alandra. There remains a lingering anticipation that the conclusion of “Star Trek: Picard” could pave the way for a fresh series, “Star Trek: Legacy,” which would continue the exploits of the Enterprise-G.

Following her assumption of the captain’s role, it’s only natural for Jeri Ryan to show more enthusiasm for spearheading Star Trek: Legacy rather than focusing on a Seven of Nine spinoff. Many fans share this sentiment.

The Star Trek Universe can be streamed on Paramount+.
