Jim Lee Confirms DC Comics Will Return to Classic Company Logo This Fall

As a lifelong DC fan since the days of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and “The Man of Steel,” I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement at the return of the iconic DC bullet logo. This classic design, with its powerful imagery of Superman breaking free from his chains, has been a part of my childhood and has shaped the way I perceive DC comics.

As a dedicated gamer and avid DC fan, I’m super pumped about DC’s All-In initiative! This line-wide shift, kicking off in October 2024, is going to reshape not only the DC multiverse but also our real world. Over the weekend, DC publisher Jim Lee confirmed that the iconic “DC bullet” logo will make a comeback, serving as the new emblem for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios. This classic symbol, which is set to adorn our comic books from October onwards, was previously used from 1964 until 2016, making this its return after a brief hiatus of two logos in the intervening years. I can’t wait to see how this change will shape the future of DC!

From 1976 to 2005, the DC branding that Milton Glaser (recognized for creating the “I love New York” logo) designed was used. Notable stories like “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “The Man of Steel,” “The Death of Superman,” and “The Dark Knight Returns” were published during this period by the publisher.

Lee expressed enthusiasm about Peter Safran and James Gunn reviving the use of the traditional DC logo across all DC comics, starting from October this year, and also on merchandise and toys in early 2025. He added that the dynamic motion logo featuring Superman breaking free from his chains symbolizes the significant impact of DC Comics in the history of comic books and the enduring influence of our iconic tales on contemporary global pop culture.

For the first time since 2012, stars have appeared in DC’s emblem again. Back in 2005, it was reported that DC took legal action against DC Shoes due to their logos being too similar to DC’s then-current one. Unfortunately for them, they hadn’t trademarked their own logo, which led to their loss in the lawsuit. As a result, they were obligated to pay DC Shoes to continue using their design. This situation brought about the 2012 version of DC’s logo, known as the “DC flip,” which debuted with The New 52.

The 2016 logo was first introduced in the one-shot comic “DC Universe: Rebirth,” which was marketed as the next instalment in the ongoing story of the DC Universe, combining classic values with a contemporary style. Given this, it’s logical that the largest publishing project since Rebirth, All In and the Absolute DC Universe, should also receive a fresh design.

According to a post by Lee, starting from October, the DC bullet will make its appearance in DC comics. Additionally, it will be showcased on toys and merchandise from the year 2025 onward.
