Martin played the role of Eric in Still Game, a series that originated as a spin-off from the comedy show Chewin’ the Fat. The storyline revolves around the humorous escapades of two elderly gentlemen from Galway, Jack (Ford Kiernan) and Victor (Greg Hemphill).
Among the primary cast members of the show, he was one of the few who were already elderly when the series initially aired.
Prior to pursuing an acting career, Martin had already served for some time in the British Royal Navy onboard the ship HMS Bermuda, and additionally, he dedicated 16 years of his life to the fire department.
Amongst the various shows I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of, there are quite a few that stand out. For instance, I was in Solid Air back in 2003, Carmelo y yo from 2000, Netflix’s Comedy Lovesick in 2014, and Rab C Nesbitt in 2011. Each of these projects holds a special place in my heart for different reasons.
Condolences have poured in for the celebrity after his death was announced, as expressed by actor Mark Hannah on platform X: “Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of James Martin today.
In the beginning, he functioned as my guide, residing not far from my family home. We spent numerous days discussing our shared craft and gaining insight from his knowledge. To me, he was simply a friend, though many know him as Eric from Still Game the nation. Farewell, Jimmy.
Simultaneously, TV producer Kathryn McGoldrick penned: “An exceptional talent, an intriguing individual, and one of the kindest people I’ve met during my professional career.
“RIP Jimmy Martin you will be sorely missed.”
