`Jimmy Olsen’s Shocking New Role`

In this new interpretation, Superman, skillfully crafted by writer Jason Aaron and artist Rafa Sandoval, is thriving splendidly. They are redefining Superman for today’s world in an extraordinary manner. Instead of being sent away from Krypton as a baby, Superman grew up on the planet, knowing his parents and culture. This alters his relationship with the Kents significantly, and Lois Lane has taken a different path. She is no longer a prize-winning reporter but works for the Lazarus Corp, following in her father’s footsteps into the military, and she’s on a mission to track down Superman. The Daily Planet hasn’t appeared yet (as of issue #4), but Jimmy Olsen, a familiar figure from the paper, makes an appearance in an unexpected role, setting him at odds with Lois Lane.

Jimmy Olsen Has Joined the New Omega Men in the Absolute Universe

In “Absolute Superman” #4, Lois Lane interviews individuals worldwide, each of whom has received aid from Superman. It’s clear that this comic doesn’t shy away from its political message – exposing corporate wrongdoings, specifically those perpetrated by Lazarus Corp. Many of these people have suffered due to Lazarus Corp.’s actions and have been rescued by Superman. During the course of her investigations, Lois receives a call from her father, who scolds her for not utilizing her Peacemaker security detail. This phone conversation introduces the main newcomers in this issue – the Omega Men.

In the primary DC Comics universe, the Omega Men are an extraterrestrial team hailing from the Vega Sector, rich with DC’s finest science fiction tales. Notably, Alan Moore penned captivating short stories set in Vega Sector, which are featured in “DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore“. It is surprising to associate that name with an Earth-based group, but it fits; the Omega Men wage war against oppressive powers ruling Vega. A central theme in “Absolute Superman” is their depiction of real-world corporate fascism.

General Lane shares a past incident where an engagement officer turned out to be a member of the Omega Men, emphasizing their potential danger. Dismissive of her father’s warnings, Lois appears to be under observation by two individuals, one with distinctive red hair. This mysterious young man confronts Lois, but she manages to gain the upper hand initially. However, she’s caught off guard when he uses his own technology to assault her. Their fight lasts for a while, with Jimmy seeming more focused on making Lois understand Lazarus’ wrongdoings and correcting her allegiances than harming her. In the end, they reach an impasse, both holding guns pointed at each other, until the other person with Jimmy intervenes.

Primus, one of the Omega Men, is not aiming to persuade Lois to abandon Lazarus; instead, she’s intent on eliminating her. In this confrontation, Jimmy resorts to using his gun to make Primus cease her actions. Lois summons Brainiac who dispatches the Peacemakers, but orders the AI system to use non-lethal ammunition, an order which is refused. Just when things appear to be spiraling out of control, a red dust envelops the area and Superman arrives. Primus attempts to converse with Kal-El, but he dismisses her and rushes towards Lois. After a brief exchange, Superman halts a group of Peacemakers with his super breath, followed by an action reminiscent from the comic Absolute Superman, Jimmy Olsen captures Superman’s departure on his phone as he soars away.

The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same with Jimmy Olsen

I’ve been quite captivated by this extraordinary journey through “Absolute Superman” so far. Compared to the changes in “Absolute Batman” and “Absolute Wonder Woman,” “Absolute Superman” has taken the mythos to unprecedented realms. Each issue has introduced another significant shift in the Superman lore, and the latest is no exception – it offers yet another remarkable deviation from the familiar face of Superman. Contrary to what one might expect, Jimmy Olsen isn’t a photographer or an investigative journalist working alongside Lois Lane to uncover Superman’s secrets. Instead, he finds himself on the opposite side, as a member of the Omega Men, working against her. It’s been a thrilling ride!

Despite the differences between Absolute Jimmy Olsen and the usual Jimmy Olsen, their likenesses remain evident. Absolute Jimmy, being of the lowest rank in the Omega Men, avoids causing harm and seeks a more courageous path towards victory. Although he opposes Lazarus Corp. and is at odds with Lois Lane, his ultimate goal is to make her understand the wrongness of her actions and collaborate with her in his unique manner. The sight of Absolute Superman recalls the awe that readers have come to expect from Jimmy Olsen in the main storyline, prompting him to take a photograph. As the tale of Absolute Jimmy Olsen unfolds, it will be exciting to see where his journey leads next.

Absolute Superman #4 is available anywhere comics are sold.
