Actor JK Simmons is famously recognized for playing Omni-Man in Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible, but he has also brought this character to life beyond the show. Notably, in late 2023, Simmons reprised his role as Omni-Man in the game Mortal Kombat 1 when the character was introduced as a downloadable fighter. Up until now, Simmons hasn’t shared much about his experience with Mortal Kombat 1 or what it entailed, so ahead of Invincible Season 3’s premiere, we delved into his thoughts on the process.
In a recent chat with ComicBook, we inquired about Simmons’ experience collaborating with NetherRealm Studios on Mortal Kombat 1 and portraying Omni-Man beyond Invincible. Simmons commended NetherRealm’s scriptwriting for the character, noting that he always scrutinizes scripts prior to taking on a project. He further expressed delight in observing how consistently the character’s voice was maintained across various platforms, even though Omni-Man was penned by a different team for Mortal Kombat 1 compared to Invincible.
Simmons expressed delight, stating, “I found it quite unexpectedly charming.” He often remarks about proposals, “The key lies in the script.” This one was particularly amusing. It had more chuckles and growls. For any recording, we usually save the fight sounds for last. I appreciated how true-to-character Omni-Man remained, even as he ventured into a new realm.
Playing Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1 was a unique moment for Simmons, but he’s had a rich history with video games throughout the years. One of his most memorable roles was as Cave Johnson in Portal 2 in 2011, which he later reprised in various projects by Valve. More recently, Simmons earned recognition for his performance as General Ketheric Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s unclear if he plans to continue acting in video games in the future, but all of his previous work in this medium has received nothing but admiration.
Currently, you’ll once more recognize Simmons’ voice as Omni-Man in Season 3 of “Invincible,” now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The season kicked off with a triple episode release and will carry on until mid-March.
