As a fan, I must admit that J.K. Simmons’ journey from a fast-talking cop to the slow, sweet Yellow M&M has been nothing short of inspiring. His anecdote about his audition for the role and the impact it had on his career is a testament to the power of serendipity and the wisdom of casting directors like Janet Eisenberg.
J.K. Simmons has done a handful of Spider-Man movies and a dozen seasons as a regular on TV shows like Oz and The Closer, but in a new interview, he credits his decades-long role as the Yellow M&M as being the gig that really changed his life. Speaking with GQ about the roles that have shaped his career, the veteran actor said that it was working as the yellow M&M (alongside red M&M actor Billy West) that allowed him the financial freedom to pursue better roles, say no to things, and spend more time with his family.
Yes, really. You can see the full video below.
Reflecting on my experiences, I shared an amusing anecdote about a memorable audition. Following my role in New York Undercover as a street-smart NYPD officer, I found myself at an audition room, where the characters were described as Red and Yellow M&Ms. In character, I was firmly rooted in the fast-talking, assertive Red M&M persona.
Since 1996, Simmons has taken on the character of Yellow in numerous ads, interludes for theater performances, and various other projects. Remarkably, he’s been associated with this role for nearly three decades now. As he points out, the campaign featuring this character hasn’t lost its charm, nor has the audience grown tired of Simmons in this role.
