Joan creator explains shocking diamond scene was “ripped from the real world”

As a viewer who’s been captivated by the intriguing world of drama and grit since my days binge-watching “Game of Thrones”, I must say that Sophie Turner’s performance in ITV’s new series, Joan, left me utterly spellbound. The first episode alone was a rollercoaster ride, taking us through the life of a woman who will go to extraordinary lengths to protect her daughter.

For a while now, there’s been excitement about the new ITV drama titled “Joan,” and the premier episode, which aired on Sunday, 29th September, certainly delivered an exhilarating first glimpse into the main character.

In the portrayal of Joan, played skillfully by Sophie Turner (known for Game of Thrones), we witness a character grappling with challenging life choices as she strives to safeguard her daughter Kelly from the perils instigated by their former partner, Gary.

In London, Joan seeks comfort with her sister and subsequently lands a position at a jewelry store following an impressive demonstration of her extensive diamond expertise to the store manager.

However, as the show progresses, it becomes clear that events are taking a sinister twist when her supervisor suggests they conduct an inventory privately together.

Despite his unawareness, it’s clear that Joan harbors more ambitious plans – ones that revolve around an untouched vault of diamonds that gaze back at her from the storage room.

Essentially, Joan consumes her apologies and departs, now substantially wealthier since the valuable diamonds have become hers.

Although the show draws heavily from Joan Hanington’s true experiences, did she really swallow a diamond in real life?

According to series creator and writer Anna Symon during a pre-release press conference, some events depicted in the show are based on truth: “The act of swallowing diamonds is factual, as well as stealing a car to visit her daughter while she was in foster care, which led to an arrest due to the stolen vehicle.

A lot of aspects in the first episode appeared to be directly lifted or inspired from reality.

During the press conference, Turner also shared his account of the incident by stating, “What I can recall is being handed gummy candies, or gummy diamonds, to ingest. They didn’t want me eating them directly from the paper, but they were so sticky that they clung to it instead.

In the end, I found myself wearing the genuine stones. However, they turned out to be cubic zirconia, ensuring I didn’t accidentally ingest them [laughs].

She remarked: “This scene is crucial, serving as a key to understanding her life. Therefore, we aimed to make it an all-consuming fixation, a captivating fascination with this glittering object that has been elusive throughout her lifetime. Now, it’s within reach for her. In such a moment, one might say they would swallow diamonds.

Besides Turner playing the role of Joan, she is supported by Frank Dillane (from Renegade Nell), Kirsty J Curtis (known for Harlots), Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (in A Spy Among Friends) and Laura Aikman (from Archie).

Joan will premiere on ITV and ITVX on Sunday 29th September at 9pm.
