Jodie Whittaker reunites with David Tennant – jokes career is a “Doctor Who convention”

As a dedicated Whovian with decades of Doctor Who fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that Jodie Whittaker‘s words resonate deeply with me. The Doctor Who universe is a unique and captivating one that seems to draw its actors back time and again, creating an intricate web of connections that span generations of Time Lords.

It’s often said that once you’re involved with Doctor Who, it stays with you forever. However, this seems particularly apt for actress Jodie Whittaker, who humorously referred to her current career as resembling a “Doctor Who convention” – implying that she’s constantly surrounded by elements of the show.

The renowned actress known for portraying the Thirteenth Doctor had a reunion with her former role-holder (and, in essence, future role-holder), David Tennant, who appeared as the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors, on BBC Radio 2.

On the Breakfast Show, with Zoe Ball temporarily absent, Scott Mills mentioned that Jodie Whittaker had acted alongside Christopher Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor, in a production of Antigone at The National Theatre.

Whittaker humorously remarked that each task she undertakes is essentially a mini-Doctor Who convention of her own.

Mills noted, and Whittaker agreed, expressing that they truly enjoyed collaborating, stating, “Working alongside Chris was a sheer delight, I couldn’t get enough of it.

In addition to their reminiscences, they fondly recalled working alongside each other during The Power of the Doctor – Jodie Whittaker’s last appearance as the Doctor in Doctor Who. This episode marked her regeneration into Tennant’s character, a significant moment before his comeback for the 60th anniversary specials.

“It was a moment!” she declared. “It was a very well kept secret.”

Tenant stated, “I have an old recording of when I called Jodie to inform her she’d transform into me during regeneration. Unfortunately, I can’t listen to it right now as it’s too early!

“What the… fill in the blank,” Whittaker teased.

Last year when Tennant came back to Doctor Who, I’ve frequently expressed my enthusiasm about the possibility of reprising that role on-screen, just like Jodie Whittaker has.

Meanwhile, I must admit, I’ve eagerly awaited the return of Mandip Gill, our beloved Yasmin Khan from Doctor Who, back on screen or speakers rather, in an exciting new Big Finish series!

On their journeys, they encounter various things, and their casual camaraderie and synchrony are noticeable. Yet, it’s not just their friendly rapport; there’s a mutual care and guardianship between them as well.

“But we haven’t seen anything beyond this. So it could be that there’s an episode that…”

That provides an opportunity for them to understand their feelings, said Mandip. However, at this moment, we’re focused on the current journey.
