Jodie Whittaker Shocks Fans with Epic Return in Doctor Who’s Season 15 Finale!

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the Doctor Who episode The Reality War.

Fans of the Thirteenth Doctor were in for a treat with the finale of Doctor Who season 15.

On Saturday, May 31st, 2025, the science fiction series airing on BBC One concluded its current season. In this finale, Ncuti Gatwa bid farewell to his role as the Fifteenth Doctor, as the character experienced another transformation through regeneration.

Yet, the Fifteenth Doctor did not face his final assignment alone; instead, one of his previous incarnations, Jodie Whittaker (who played the Thirteenth Doctor), joined him in a brief appearance.

Embarking on a journey within the TARDIS to rescue Poppy, who had mysteriously disappeared in the altered Wish World dimension, I found myself faced with an unexpected ally – Thirteen. At first, she attempted to dissuade me from my mission, offering guidance as if to steer me away.

Thirteen clarified, “I seem to have appeared from another point in time due to a massive temporal rift that’s about to occur, and it appears to be your doing.” She warned, “Any disruption to the Time Vortex might cause irreparable harm to the entire universe.

However, Thirteen knew it was never going to work and ended up helping Fifteen in his plan.

There was even a lovely moment where Gatwa’s Time Lord said to Whittaker’s: “I love you, Doctor.”

“I should say that to Yaz,” Thirteen realised.

“You never do,” Fifteen replied. “But she knows.”

In the 2022 episode “The Power of the Doctor,” Whittaker’s final performance as the Doctor occurred. This storyline concluded with her character regenerating into the Fourteenth Doctor, played by David Tennant who had previously acted as the Tenth Doctor. For the show’s 60th anniversary, Tennant returned to play the main character in three additional specials.

After finishing that brief sprint, the Fourteenth Doctor underwent a process of duplication, resulting in the emergence of the Fifteenth Doctor, while the original Fourteenth Doctor remained intact and healthy.

After that, Gatwa played the role of the Doctor for two seasons and two holiday episodes, with Millie Gibson appearing as his companion, Ruby Sunday, during the initial run, and Varada Sethu joining as Belinda Chandra in the second season.

Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Disney+ outside of the UK.
