Joe Don Baker, star of 3 James Bond films and Walking Tall, dies aged 89

Legendary actor Joe Don Baker, widely recognized for his iconic roles in the 1973 movie “Walking Tall” and as a three-time James Bond co-star, passed away at the age of 89.

In “The Living Daylights,” Baker portrayed the antagonist Brad Whittaker, later reappearing during the James Bond series featuring Pierce Brosnan. His role changed to that of CIA Agent Jack Wade, who appeared in both “GoldenEye” and “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

Baker initially played the villain Brad Whittaker in “The Living Daylights,” then resurfaced during the Pierce Brosnan period as CIA Agent Jack Wade in two movies: “GoldenEye” and “Tomorrow Never Dies.

Apart from the roles mentioned earlier, such as Walking Tall, Baker also left a significant mark in films like Charley Varrick, The Natural, Fletch, Cape Fear, Mars Attacks!, The Dukes of Hazzard, among others, during his career.

In the realm of television, I found myself gracing the small screen back in 1985, starring in the gripping BBC drama “Edge of Darkness”. This performance, I must say, landed me a well-deserved nomination for the prestigious BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor.

Initiated his television acting journey on American screens in the 1960s’ middle part, spanning a remarkable five decades. His last performance was in Jeff Nichols’ 2012 movie, “Mud,” which also featured Matthew McConaughey.

The family released a statement, characterizing him as a shining example of compassion and generosity.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’ve always been drawn to characters that resonate deeply, and Joe Don was one such character in real life. His warmth and compassion reached out and touched countless souls throughout his journey, creating an unforgettable impact on anyone privileged enough to cross his path.

“As we say goodbye to Joe Don, we hold onto the memories and the love he shared with us.”

Following the news, a number of fans and admirers paid tribute on social media.

One admirer posted on X (previously Twitter): “Awoke to the sorrowful news of the demise of hardened film star Joe Don Baker last week. There may never have been an actor who so authentically portrayed the resilient working-class American tough guy persona, and Baker was undoubtedly that man. May you find peace, and continue to stride forward, good gentleman.

As a film enthusiast, it’s with a heavy heart that I learned of Joe Don Baker’s passing. Although he portrayed a villain in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, I will forever remember him as the charming and down-to-earth Wade from GOLDENEYE and TOMORROW NEVER DIES. He was always there when we needed him, and his presence on the silver screen will be greatly missed.

Actor and author Rufus Jones extolled Baker’s performance in Edge of Darkness, calling it: “A truly exceptional TV series – one that opened the door to the era of television storytelling we experience today.

He went on to say, “The British public hadn’t witnessed an act quite like Joe Don Baker’s. Impressive, utterly convincing, endearing, and chilling. Farewell, you magnificent performer.
