Over a span of five years, Joe Goldberg has been winning over both his victims and spectators through his captivating allure. However, nothing lasts forever, and ‘You’ Season 5 managed to slightly miss the mark with viewers, yet it still proved successful.
The fifth and final season of “You,” based on Caroline Kepnes’ book series, debuted on Netflix on April 24th, featuring 10 new episodes that concluded Joe’s story. Over its 50-episode run, the show initially premiered on Lifetime before moving to Netflix for subsequent seasons. Interestingly, while ratings for Season 5 were low, it still dominated the charts with satisfactory reviews.
During the timeframe from April 21st to April 27th, the fifth season of ‘You’ made its debut as the most-watched show, boasting a total of 10.1 million views and an impressive 85.2 million hours watched. The series, starring Penn Badgley, broke into the charts in a staggering 88 countries worldwide, claiming the top spot in no less than 37 territories. However, in the United States, Joe’s performance fell flat, while viewers continued to be captivated by other Netflix content. In its second week, the Western romance managed to add an additional 9.4 million views and 73.9 million hours watched, narrowly missing ‘You’ Season 5 in terms of viewership.
It turns out that You Season 5 wasn’t the only season of the series to generate buzz among viewers. Before diving into how Joe’s story concludes, many fans went back to the start and marathoned Season 1, which landed in the Top 10 with 1.8 million views and an impressive 13.6 million hours watched. Given that Netflix only released the Top 10 list, it remains uncertain whether this rewatch encompassed all four seasons available or merely the first one.
Despite generating a lot of buzz when it premiered at the top of the charts, Season 5 of You has seen its lowest ratings and audience numbers compared to previous seasons. In contrast, Season 1, which originally aired on Lifetime before moving to Netflix, attracted over 40 million viewers in its first month upon release. This number increased even further for Season 2, which amassed over 54 million views during its initial month. Although data on the first two seasons (released in 2018 and 2019) is not available from Netflix’s history, Tudum provides insights into future seasons of the popular series.
Initially, Season 1 and Season 3 both made a strong debut, accumulating 23 million and 133.1 million hours watched over their respective first two days. Interestingly, the viewership for the series finales was lower in comparison. The numbers for Season 4 are a bit tricky to compare since Netflix released it in two parts. Specifically, Part 1 garnered 92 million hours watched, while Part 2 managed 78.8 million hours viewed. Intriguingly, both seasons 1 and 3 entered the charts simultaneously with 19.2 million and 11.4 million hours watched, respectively.
The critically acclaimed Netflix show “You” experienced a dip in its latest season’s critical reception. While all five seasons have a Certified Fresh rating, Season 5 only holds an 82% score compared to the previous seasons which had ratings of 94%, 89%, 93%, and 92%. Similarly, audience-wise, Season 5 is the lowest rated in the series and is the only one labeled “rotten,” with a score of 56%. Previous seasons had scores of 82%, 84%, 71%, and 62% respectively.
What Happens in You Season 5?
For five consecutive periods, Joe Goldberg repeatedly convinced himself and viewers that all he yearned for was affection and validation. Yet, with a tumultuous upbringing, Goldberg transformed into a relentless serial killer, fixating on his targets and harboring a self-proclaimed savior mentality until they no longer required him. This predicament often led to him growing tired or seeking out a new victim. Among his victims, he took the lives of Beck and Love; he had earlier killed his first love, Candice.
Kate, his current spouse, was aware that he had murdered people in the past. Despite this, she accepted him for who he is. In Season 5, he returns to New York under his true identity after using multiple aliases, and has been married to Kate for three years without any further killings. He’s enjoying a peaceful life with their son, Henry. However, when Bronte intrudes upon Mooney’s (his old bookstore), things take a turn, and his ongoing struggle for love and acceptance ultimately lead him down a path of deceit in the end.
All five seasons of You are available to stream on Netflix.
