Joe & Mac Retro Collection Brings Prehistoric Fun to PS5 This Year

We’ve encountered the Joe & Mac franchise before, but in truth, we’ve never invested much time actually playing it. However, that’s about to change once the Joe & Mac Retro Collection drops on PlayStation 5, thanks to Red Art Games later this year.

Originally designed by Data East for arcade machines in the 90s and later adapted for the Super Nintendo, these games feature large, side-scrolling platforms populated by colossal dinosaur characters.

These games were first created by Data East for arcades back in the 90s and then brought to the Super Nintendo. They are side-scroller platform games with huge dinosaur sprites.

This collection includes details about the three releases scheduled for the upcoming compilation. Importantly, it’s just the SNES editions that are featured in this overview.

Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja
A run-and-gun platformer that follows the titular Joe and Mac as they fight through 12 hellish levels using prehistoric (but not just) tools and weapons. While the game was censored when it came out in the west, the Retro Collection also includes the original Japanese version!
Congo’s Caper
A side-scrolling action platformer centered around Congo, a half-human, half-monkey boy looking to rescue his girlfriend from a demon through 35 varied levels.
Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics
This title adds a light roleplaying aspect to the series. While the goal is still to defeat cavemen and dinosaurs, players can court and wed their Stone Age girlfriend, and even have a child with her!

Just as you’d anticipate from a current retro compilation, each of the three games will come packaged with contemporary comforts like rewind, save states, adjustable CRT filters, and more. Importantly, these remakes maintain the authentic Japanese and Western experiences, free from any censorship or modifications.

Starting from June 10th, I’m excitedly joining a Kickstarter campaign that gives me the chance to express my early interest in this intriguing project. Although we haven’t set an exact launch date yet, keep a lookout as we plan to unveil it later this year!
